Hangover Symptoms

Had fun boozing last night? Sorry, but now you will have to deal with the awful hangover symptoms! What are they? Let's check out...
If you are a little too fond of the bottle, you would know the exact consequences of a hangover, waiting for you next morning! Terrible feeling.... I know! But then every coin has two sides! We consume alcohol whenever we are too happy or too sad, alcohol is just one way to celebrate or lament over the cause! We all know that alcohol has adverse effects on our health, but then, we still tend to consume it. We avoid the 'ADVERSE' effects very easily, but our body doesn't! Our body gives us signs saying that what we have consumed isn't good for it! Although, a hangover is not a chronic condition resulting from alcoholism (like liver failure), one still has to suffer quite a bit because of the over drinking. The next section discusses the common symptoms and cures of a hangover.

Hangover Symptoms and Cures

Nothing that comes out as an illness in our body should be taken lightly. When it comes to a hangover, the symptoms are nothing but our body's way of telling us that something's not right. In fact, these symptoms just give you a trailer of the way alcohol and drugs affect our body and mind. Imagine the condition of addicts! Below is a list of some common symptoms and remedies that will make your dealing with hangover a little easier.
  • Headache: That's the first thing you get in the morning after waking up! The head feels as heavy as a rock! The quickest cure that we can think of, is to take aspirin and get rid of the headaches. But don't do it! Just like alcohol, aspirin too is a blood thinner, so consuming it while you still have alcohol in your body, can add to the adverse effects. Instead, try a home remedy to get rid of the headache. Hot sips of lemon tea (without sugar) can help get rid of the headache. Lemon has natural properties which neutralize the blood sugar levels and helps get rid of the headache. Another remedy to cure the headache would be to crush thyme leaves and boil them for 5 minutes. Have a cup of this liquid and you will surely get some relief. If you don't have time for this, eating raw cabbage also helps.
  • Dehydration: Another symptom is dehydration which also is the reason for headaches. If your condition permits, try having a lot of water before going to bed. The next morning when you get up, drink at least 8 - 10 glasses of water in the entire day.
  • Vomiting: No matter how awful and pathetic it feels, vomiting is the best thing you can do to get rid of the hangover as soon as possible. Why? Because, vomiting gives you a chance to throw up the alcohol in your body. Drinking lime juice or lemon juice in this case would help you get rid of the horrible feeling after throwing up. Also it will rehydrate the body and regulate the sugar levels.
  • Fatigue: In spite of sleeping for most of the day, we still tend to encounter fatigue. Why? Because, when sleeping with extra consumption of alcohol in our body, the mind is unable to relax. The mind is unable to reach the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep stage therefore getting no rest at all. Grab a banana or two and eat it. A banana shake would also help in dealing with fatigue.
  • Diarrhea: The body needs to dispose off the unwanted alcohol that you have dumped in it! So another outcome of a hangover, is diarrhea. Don't drink orange or lime juice if you are suffering from diarrhea. Consumption of banana and apple juice would help instead.
  • Loss of Appetite: Obviously, a person suffering from the symptoms mentioned above, won't feel like biting into a meal. Yet, it's important to do so as your body needs it. What is advisable is to consume minerals rich simple and light food. Rice, pickles, canned fish, toast, chicken soups etc would be the right choice.
  • Dizziness: It's related to the above mentioned causes. As your brain hasn't been well hydrated, hasn't taken proper rest, it is obvious that it won't function properly resulting in the dizzy and lethargic feeling you'll have to deal with all day. Consumption of honey which contains high amounts of natural sugar, can help reduce the level of alcohol in blood, thereby reducing the dizziness.
Many a time, the symptoms mentioned above, start appearing while consuming alcohol. As I mentioned in the beginning of the article, that never ignore what your body is trying to tell you. If your body gives you the hangover like symptoms at the very start, may be you should let go the bottle at that point of time. Many people don't want to face this, but it's a fact that alcohol is slow poison! So, it won't be wrong to say that a hangover is nothing but alcohol poisoning. So make sure you take care of yourself because if you won't, who else will?
