Berry reveals the suicide attempt in a new interview with Parade magazine. She said, "I was sitting in my car, and I knew the gas was coming when I had an image of my mother finding me." Berry, 40, says that the thought of her mother cleared her head and made her get it together. Berry said of her mother, "She sacrificed so much for her children and to end my life would be an incredibly selfish thing to do. It was all about a relationship. My sense of worth was so low. I promised myself I would never be a coward again." Berry and Justice were married from 1992 – 1996.
After Berry’s divorce from Justice she married singer Eric Benet in 2001. She describes the relationship as "really horrific." She said, "We were in sex rehab after one year. I wish I had left then, but I was putting everyone’s needs before mine." The couple was separated in 2004 and finally divorced in 2005. She adopted Benet’s daughter, India, and the two remain close.
Berry is now dating Canadian model Gabriel Aubry, 31. They met at a photoshoot for Versace in November 2005 and have been dating ever since. She recently said, "I'm really happy in my personal life, which is a novelty to me. You know I'm not the girl that has the best relationships." Berry has been burned twice and recently stated, "I will never, never get married again." She says now that she doesn’t feel like she needs to be validated by being married. Berry said in the interview, "I’ve accomplished things I never thought I would. Now my sights are set on a different chapter in my life, which is motherhood. That’s the goal I have very clearly set for myself."
