Gunman Killed after Shooting Two Officers at Pentagon
A deranged California man opened fire at the entrance of the Pentagon on Thursday, wounding two police officers before being shot and killed.
John Patrick Bedell, 36, of Hollister, California was killed yesterday after shooting two police officers. Bedell was eventually gunned down by the two officers as well as a third who responded to the gunfire. Bedell apparently drove to the Pentagon from California over the last couple weeks and evidence is emerging that Bedell was motivated by resentment of the U.S. government and military, as well as suspicions about the truth behind 9/11.
Authorities are still investigating Bedell's background, including Internet posts that appear to be written by someone of the same name as Bedell. Bedell referenced the alleged suicide of a military officer in 1991 and the 9/11 attacks as two areas where he believed justice had not been served.
Pentagon police described Bedell as a normal-looking man, who was wearing a suit when he emerged from the subway at the Pentagon station. He ascended the escalator and walked up to the two officers, calmly pulled a 9mm semi-automatic weapon from his jacket and opened fire. One officer was struck in the shoulder and the other in the thigh. Bedell died of multiple gunshot wounds, including at least one to the head.
Bedell didn't say anything before opening fire, nor did he appear to have any emotion on his face at the time. Prior to 9/11, the subway station emptied directly into the Pentagon. Now the station has been moved away and there are layers of security in place before anyone can enter the Pentagon building. Bedell was carrying a large amount of additional ammunition in his jacket and ammunition was also found in his vehicle at a nearby parking garage.
