Other causes include frequently clenching or grinding teeth, improper teeth alignment, filings that are poorly done, medical conditions like diabetes, menopause and pregnancy in women and the consumption of certain medication.

First and foremost, maintaining good oral hygiene is of utmost importance to prevent all the different kinds of dental health related diseases. Practicing good oral health habits can also help reverse gingivitis and prevent periodontitis. You need to brush your teeth at least twice a day with a good antibacterial toothpaste. You should also brush your teeth after eating impacted foods like chocolates and popcorn. Rinsing the mouth and flossing teeth after every meal is also very essential. If possible use an antibacterial mouth wash to rise your mouth thoroughly. Make sure you rid your teeth of any food particles that may have gotten stuck between the teeth. You must also scrape your tongue using a tongue scraper to get rid of germs on the tongue. Use a good quality toothbrush for brushing teeth and good quality floss to avoid injuries to the gums and the tissues around you teeth.

Once the gum disease has reached the periodontitis stage, it is very essential that you consult a dentist for an appropriate treatment. You may also require gum surgery or laser treatment if the pockets are too deep. Along with the antibiotics prescribes, you can also follow some safe and natural cures at home. Here are some home remedies.
- Consuming dietary supplements like vitamin C and zinc supplements or myrrh capsules can be extremely helpful in curing gum disease and will also aid the treatment.
- Massage your gums and teeth with essential oils like clove oil, eucalyptus oil or peppermint oil. Do this twice a day and make sure you do not rinse off the oil.
- Prepare an antibacterial mouthwash by 3% hydrogen peroxide solution with half a glass of water. Use this to rinse your mouth twice daily.
- Prepare a solution by mixing baking soda and water. Apply this to your teeth and gums with your fingers and after a few minutes, brush your teeth and gums gently with the solution. Rinse with water and brush once again.
- Gargling your mouth with salt solution will also help cure gum disease.
