Guatemala

Guatemala, the most populous country in Central America, is bordered on the north and west by Mexico, on the south and east by El Salvador and Honduras, on the south by the Pacific Ocean, and on the east by the Caribbean Sea and Belize. Once part of the great Maya civilization and later a Spanish colony, Guatemala was ruled by military officers allied with a few wealthy landowners for most of its post-independence history. Most of the southern half of the country consists of mountains and plateaus. Most of the population and urban centers are in the highland areas of the south.
