Guard Dogs that Don't Shed

We love to pet our dogs who are covered with soft, smooth fur. But the problem with the fur is that they can't promise to be right there, on the body of the dog. And when you have the additional requirement for guard dogs that don't shed, appropriate breed selection becomes all the more difficult. So here is some information about some non shedding guard dogs.

What is a Non-Shedding Dog Breed?

Well, before we proceed to learn about dog breeds that don't shed, it is important to know that there is no such dog breed that does not shed any hair at all (unless we are talking about the hairless variety, the American hairless terrier). Shedding is a natural process. Just as our hair fall so that new hair can come up in its place, shedding in dogs takes place so that new coat can come in. However, by the non-shedding dog breeds, we refer to those that shed very little hair.

Non-shedding Guard Dogs

You want a pet dog that alerts you by barking against intruders inside your home or raise an alarm when a stranger approaches your property or family. If it's just alerting that you are expecting from your pet dog, then you can go for watch dogs. However, if you want more than just raising alarm of your dog, then it has to be a guard dog because other than just barking at a stranger, a guard dog also attacks at an unwanted guest. But if you want to keep your carpet free of your guard dog's fur or because some member of your family is allergic to the hair that might float in the air, here is a list of some guard dogs that belong to the non-shedding breed:

Airedale Terrier
Also known as the Waterside Terrier, this native of England was bred originally to hunt otters. With an average weight of 55-66 pounds and height of 23-24 inches at withers, this is the largest of all terriers that originated in Britain. They have hard, short-haired double coat that needs regular grooming so that they shed little. These are very intelligent dog breeds with natural hunting instincts. Though they can be easily trained in dog obedience, they need a firm trainer or owner who knows to be the 'top dog'. With proper socialization, these can be one of those guard dogs that are good with children, however, they should not be left non-supervised with little ones. They are usually friendly with other household pets and strangers but their protective instincts may be piqued if they sense something suspicious.

Kerry Blue Terrier
A native of Ireland, the Kerry Blue Terrier is a medium-sized dog whose original role was that of a farm dog. However, nowadays it makes an excellent choice for guard dogs that don't shed. This is one of the energetic guard dog types that can be trained relatively easily. However, it can be stubborn at times. It is a multipurpose dog that besides being effective as guard dogs can also be good companions. A Kerry Blue Terrier is a little choosy about his doggy friends and can be aggressive towards other dogs and animals. It is also cautious of strangers and needs proper introduction to accept family members. These dogs need to be groomed daily for their bluish-gray coat to maintain its shiny look.

Komondor
The Komondor is a powerful dog breed of Hungarian origin. It has a strong instinct of guarding which is best suited to guard livestock and other properties. It can be vicious towards strange animals, however are friendly with those that are raised with family. They are very territorial and do not like unknown human beings. This dog is moderately playful but very devoted and affectionate towards family members. Because of such alertness along with the fact that it is a non shedding variety, Komonder is considered as one of the best guard dogs for those who own livestock and have family members that are allergic to dander. However, their long, corded coat tends to accumulate dirt easily and grooming is takes lot of time.

Standard Poodle
A favorite of many dog lovers because of its affectionate and friendly disposition, the standard poodle is an excellent choice for non-shedding dog breeds. An intelligent dog breed, the Poodle requires its own space and may be a little high nosed about its animals friends. It is a playful dog that loves people but is quick on alerting its owner of intruders. Although it may not cause serious physical harm to a stranger, its size and loud barking can make one think twice of breaking into someone's house.

Other than the aforementioned dog breeds, the Bouvier des Flandres or the Belgian cattle dog, the Giant Schnauzer and the Polish Lowland Sheepdog are other non-shedding guard dogs.
