Greenskys
A tale from the future.
This town had to be the worst. The people from the last outpost warned me not to come in this direction. Maybe I came here because I'm stubborn, maybe because I felt I had no choice. Either way, I regret coming this way.
I stood above what was once known as Washington D.C. The town stood in the green haze I was used to seeing. The only difference in the color, is that it was thicker, darker. The damage here was amazing.
All the houses had been blasted into small pieces. Most were about the size of my hand, but occasionally there was a bigger piece. It felt weird knowing I stood where the worlds most powerful government was centered.
I covered my face with a nurse mask I had found and made my way across the ruined city.
***
It took about three hours to get out of the haze. By that time it was starting to get dark, so I decided to find a decent place to rest. I found a spot where the haze wasn't at full strength and lay down on my beaten up blanket. I thought I could almost see the moon. I fell asleep in memory of its once bright glow.
I was in a room I recognized, the basement. Most nights I fell asleep there to keep the sounds of my neighbors arguing away. I was reading a novel and drinking a soda. The scene suddenly changed. Sounds so loud my eardrums bled emitted from all around me. The room was shaking, but I couldn't feel it. The only sensation in the world was heat, lots of heat.
I ran and found a fire blanket. Afterwards I hid under the steel bar we had. I felt safe. Suddenly the world fell down. Literally. I had screamed as loud as possible, even though the roar in my ears still made me deaf. I kept screaming. I was still screaming.
