What is Green Tea Extract
Green tea extract is a herbal extract derived from green tea. The extract form of green tea is said to contain high levels of antioxidants and other beneficial compounds. It is available in different types like strong infusion, soft extract, dry extract, partly purified extract, etc. While strong infusion green tea extract is prepared by soaking the green tea leaves in an aqueous solution of alcohol, soft extract is obtained when the strong infusion is further concentrated to around 25%. The strong infusions are concentrated to around 50%, and the resultant product is transformed to dehydrated extract, which is called dry extract. In partly purified extracts, various techniques are employed, so as to increase the concentration of catechins.
So, the active ingredients in green tea extract are polyphenols and antioxidants, like, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG). This antioxidant epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is said to be very powerful, as compared to others, like, vitamin C. This extract is available in the form of powder, capsules, tablets, etc. and are usually administered as per the polyphenol and EGCG content. One capsule of green tea extract with 90% polyphenols is said to be equivalent to five cups of green tea.

Now, we know that the popularity of green tea is mainly based on its health benefits. The active ingredients of green tea are found in a slightly higher concentration in green tea extract and so, the extract too offers these health benefits. Various studies have suggested the role of green tea in killing cancer cells, without affecting the healthy cells. Green tea extract is said to be beneficial in controlling the spread of cancer cells, especially, cancer of the lungs, liver, breasts, etc. It is also believed to be helpful in reducing the levels of bad cholesterol, thereby reducing the risk of certain cardiovascular diseases. Green tea extract, that is rich in fluorides, is also beneficial for dental health, as it is believed to be useful in preventing tooth decay and some gum diseases.
You might have heard about the use of green tea extract for weight loss. Various studies are still underway, regarding the link between green tea and weight loss. It is suggested that green tea is good for boosting metabolism and the rate of fat oxidation. The bioflavonoids in green tea extract are said to be beneficial in controlling digestive and respiratory infections and in preventing damage to the liver. Even high blood pressure is said to be lowered with this extract.
In short, green tea extract, which is the herbal derivative of green tea is available in liquid, capsule and tablet form. It is used as a herbal supplement, but is not evaluated for its safety. It has been suggested that people with conditions like, blood clotting disorders, heart and kidney problems, nervous disorders and thyroid problems must avoid using this product. While some people may develop green tea extract side effects due to the caffeine content, sometimes, it can be allergic too. However, it has been speculated that use of green tea extract may cause side effects, like, loss of appetite, anxiety or nervousness, headache, insomnia, irregular heart beats, diarrhea/constipation, stomach upset, etc. So, it is advisable that pregnant and nursing women, kids and those with allergies, should avoid using this extract. Others too must seek the opinion of their doctor, before resorting to this supplement. It is recommended to use green tea extract, as per the instructions of a qualified and experienced herbal practitioner. Above all, use it in moderation.
