The term is further extended to mean a political division or a territory of a sovereign state or a political division of a geographical region. Normally, a country does mean a sovereign territory, but not always. It is associated with a state, government or a nation. In layman terms, the term country is used to mean both nations and states. There do exist certain cohesive geographical entities, that were previously sovereign states and are commonly said to be countries. The first example to be mentioned among them are England, Scotland and Wales in the United Kingdom. Previously Bavaria, was a state, but is now a part of Germany, same is the case with Piedmont in Italy. Have you wondered, there are how many countries in the world?
