Story of the Christmas Stocking

The Christmas stocking story, like many good legends has gone through many versions, where each story has evolved to allow for differences in time period, culture and good old fashioned story telling. Well! Whatever be the version, here I would like to share my favorite version of the Christmas stocking story. It goes like this………

"Long time ago there lived a father who had three beautiful daughters. The young girls were kind and strong, but there father was unable to get them married because he did not have enough money to pay for their dowries.

One day St. Nicholas of Myra was passing through the village when he heard the locals talking about the condition of the young girls. Since St. Nicholas knew the father would be proud to accept an outright gift, he waited for it to turn dark after which he snuck into the man’s house and dropped three bags of gold coins down the chimney.

These bags of gold dropped into the stockings that the girls had hung out to dry by the fireplace. When they awoke in the morning, each daughter found enough money for a generous dowry. Ultimately, the young girls were married happily.

Soon word of St. Nicolas’s generosity spread and others began to hang out their stockings by the fireplace, hoping for a gift of the same kind!"
