Grammy Awards Criticized for Warm Embrace of Chris Brown
Some critics are speaking out about Chris Brown's prominent role in Sunday night's Grammy Awards, with many questioning whether a domestic abuser should be forgiven so quickly.
Chris Brown has moved on from his pre-Grammy 2009 beating of then-girlfriend Rihanna. And, for those paying attention, Brown probably feels as though he was much more of a victim than Rihanna ever was. After all, not only was Brown arrested, tried and convicted of felony assault, but his "career" and "fame" suffered greatly as a result of the incident. But, only three short years later, Brown is once again near the top of the music world, hitting the stage on three separate occasions during the Grammy Awards and taking home a trophy for Best R&B Album.
So, by almost any measure, it's safe to say that Chris Brown is back. Of course, his presence throughout the evening didn't go unnoticed by many who questioned whether or not it was appropriate for him to have returned to such prominence so quickly. But, as Grammy organizers were quick to point out, the evening is about musical success and achievement, not a forum on morality or the character of the artists.
The situation is complex and any understanding of its depths requires a nuanced observation of the many levels at play. Rihanna appears to have long ago let go of any anger toward Brown, and rumors are constantly swirling that the two have continued their stormy relationship in secret since shortly after the beating.
Brown has struggled to come to terms with the situation, in which there was no doubt that he was the aggressor and the villain. For someone with such an obvious lust for fame and approval, that realization may have proven an impossible one to process. And now that he has been granted his keys to return to the kingdom, he's having a hard time holding back his venom toward those that would prefer that he never be allowed back in.
