Google vs. Ebay
These 'deals'...joint-venture deals of sort (although in the case of YouTube a direct buy-out) go on a lot. For example...
Now, one recurring theme that I occasionally return to throughout my articles is the Google vs. eBay debate...and that got a littler hotter yesterday...
Why?
Well, I’m sure you heard: YouTube.com got BOUGHT by Google for about £1 billion quid... a whole lot of moolah.
Why? Well, my initial thought on hearing the news was ‘Adsense’...in short, Google’s service whereby they run ads on someone else’s site, and then take a % of the revenue. Google had their own Video site (Google video) but it was nothing compared to YouTube.
I think Google realised they were way behind YouTube...gave in...and simply bought them.
Did you know?
I think I’m right in saying that eBay once had its ‘own’ payment service - before it acquired paypal. In the end, paypal got so big and had so much momentum that eBay ended up buying paypal.
These ‘deals’...joint-venture deals of sort (although in the case of YouTube a direct buy-out) go on a lot. For example, eBay recently did a deal with Google to let Google run ADVERTS on the eBay site. You may or may not have seen the ‘sponsored links’ on the eBay site.
So, my point?
Simply that it can often be better to be ‘competitive collaborators’ rather than to adopt a totally outright competitive stance.
I could give a ‘dodgy’ example here direct from eBay of what some sellers are doing right now...but will have to save it for another day.
Be sure though, there’s plenty of fertile territory to be ploughed when you collaborate with your ‘competitors’.
Something worth thinking about, whatever you’re doing at the moment - on eBay, or off eBay...
