If you are learning the game, then the driver (also known as 1-wood) will be one of the most difficult clubs to master. As it is the longest club with the length reaching 45 inches, the swing is very difficult to control. These clubs help get the ball into the air as they have small heads and greater lofts and they are easier to use when compared to irons which are described below.
Golf Clubs – Irons
The Irons are so named because their club heads are made of metal. Please do not confuse them with Woods. While metal club heads in a Wood is a recent change, it has been used in Irons for centuries.
A typical set of Irons will include a 3-iron through pitching wedge, 8 clubs in total. These clubs are differentiated by a number (‘PW’) that is present on the sole of each club. As a beginner, choose the ‘cavity back’ styled club in which the rear end of the club head is hollowed out. These clubs will help create an effect termed as ‘perimeter weighting’ which helps a new player. The yardage gap between the irons is generally 10-15 yards that is a 3 iron will produce shots that are about 15 yards longer that the 4 iron. Further, as you will move through your iron set, the shorter clubs will have a steeper trajectory that the shots will rise at a steeper angle and will also fall at a steeper angle.
Golf Clubs – Wedges
Wedges are similar to Irons but are considered to be a different category as they are specialized. The different categories of the wedges include the gap wedge, sand wedge and the lob wedge. These wedges are sold individually and as a set.
The wedges are often referred to as the ‘scoring clubs’ as they are used to hot a short shot close to the flagstick. As a beginner a pitching wedge is sufficient and you will definitely want to add the sand wedge to your collection once you get a hang of and become addicted to the game of golf.
Golf Clubs – Putters
Putters are the most used clubs is a game of golf. On an average if two putts are made per green, then the putter will be used 36 times during the game. Also, there are more varieties of the putter available than any other club.
Putters are available in three types of club heads and three lengths. The three types of club heads are the traditional blade, a heel-toe club head and the mallet club head. The three lengths available are the standard (normal), belly and the broomstick (long) putters. You will have to choose a putter that you are comfortable with. It is often said that a putter chooses a player.

Hybrid clubs are a recent addition to the game of the golf and they are gaining a lot of popularity as they are very easy to use, especially for beginners. Many professional players too have started using these clubs.
The clubs are so named because they contain both the elements of the Woods and the Irons in their design. This combination helps in enhancing the technical features of the club that aid in getting the ball airborne and reduce the effects of miss hits.
