Goan cuisine is often confused with Malvani cuisine of the entire Konkan region that includes Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka. Even though Malvani cuisine overlaps Goan cuisine, Goa has a distinctive gourmet treasure of its own.
Being a coastal area, seafood is abundant in Goa, and the Goans have done a great job of making it highly delectable. The staple diet of the Goans is rice with a host of fish curries. Feni is a popular drink and is made from cashew apples. Coconut, being abundant in the area, is also readily used to enhance the flavor of many dishes and drinks.
Of course, there is a lot more to Goan cuisine than just rice, fish and feni. Chicken and beef are also popular and at the same time there is no dearth of vegetarian fare.
