How to Choose Glazing Kitchen Cabinets
Now glazing is slightly different to painting so simply applying paint on the cabinets is certainly not glazing. In glazing, the purpose is to bring a glaze on the wooden cabinets. Yes paint is most definitely used in this process but the paint used here is more watery unlike the thick version. The glazing mixture basically contains paint and the glazing liquid. Glazing liquids dry clear but when wet they appear to be milky white. Please note that only applying glazing liquid on the cabinets would not give them any color. And therefore a portion of paint is added to the glazing liquid. The glazing liquid dilutes the paint and also keeps the paint from drying quickly while you are applying it.
Choosing the right colors also plays an important role when glazing the cabinets. This is what helps in getting the desired look. If you want an old look then dark colors such as black or dark brown or dark gray colors would be suitable. And for a more earthier shade you could use brown. In fact, any color of choice should be fine depending on the appearance that you'd like. If you don't wish to waste much time on deciding upon the color, you could opt for glazing the shelves darker. Which means that instead of going for a new color, you could simply use a darker shade of the existing color of the kitchen cabinets.
How to Glaze Kitchen Cabinets
Things you'll need to start with the process of glazing the cabinets include a can of glaze, a can of paint, a mixing bowl and a mixing stick and a couple of old rags. You shouldn't be finding it difficult to get the can of glaze as they are available at paint stores. Follow the given procedure after you assemble all that is required.
- Remove the Cabinets - To start with, all the doors and cabinet hardware need to be removed. This makes the work simpler.
- Clean the Kitchen Cabinet Doors - Once everything is removed, wash the kitchen cabinet doors with water and a mild soap. Once it's washed, allow it to completely dry. This step can be avoided if the cabinets were painted not so long ago.
- Mix Glaze and Paint - The proportion of glaze to paint should be perfect to get the right shade. You should mix the glaze and paint depending on how dark you need the glaze to be. The ratio of paint to glaze should be 3:1 for a dark glaze, 1:1 for a medium glaze and 1:3 for a light glaze. After pouring the two together, ensure that you mix it well before applying it.
- Start Glazing - Once your glazing mixture is prepared, start to glaze the kitchen cabinets. Dip a piece of rag in the mixture and using circular or straight strokes apply the glazing mixture on the cabinets. Once you apply the glaze, wipe it off with a cloth. This helps in maintaining a light layer of glaze on the cabinet. When applying glaze, don't apply it all over the cabinets. Working in small areas ensures that the glaze does not dry off and you can wipe it off to avoid a dark layer of glaze.
- Dry the Cabinets - Once you finish glazing the cabinets, allow them to dry. The time limit for it be left for drying is mentioned on the glaze can.
- Fix them - Now your kitchen cabinets are ready to be hung.
