Girls, Boys and Dance - Chapter 1

Just another day for Kaitlin... or is it?
"Kaitlin, Kaitlin where are you?"
"I’m right here Mum," Kaitlin Prescott replied to her mother as she grabbed her dance bag and ran out her bedroom door.

She ran down the stairs of her family’s townhouse and nearly crashed straight into her mother.

"What were you doing? You’re going to be late!" Her mother exclaimed as she grabbed the keys and her bag. Kaitlin was due at Ms Helèn’s dance studio for rehearsals in 5 minutes, and it was a ten minute drive. Michelle was going to kill her. Michelle Charles was Kaitlin’s best friend. They had been friends since Michelle had stolen Kaitlin’s Barbie doll in preschool. Ever since that day they had been practically inseparable.

"Where were you?" Shouted Michelle as Kaitlin walked through the door nearly ten minutes late.
"Sorry I lost track of time," Kaitlin replied while putting down her stuff.

"Kaitlin, please warm up then take your place. We’re rehearsing for the recital next month. That reminds me, girls I need dress sizes so I can order your costumes." Ms Helèn called from the front of the room.

Michelle went back to her position in the group as Kaitlin put her dance shoes on and began to warm up. She stretched her arm over her head and touched her toes on the opposite foot. She held her position for as long as she could. She then switched sides and repeated the stretch.

When she looked up again, she noticed a new student at the front of the room, a boy. This was the first boy who had ever been in one of her dance classes. She wondered who he was, and if he was any good. Suddenly he turned around and looked at her; he had caught her staring at him, not a good first impression.

It wasn’t until he turned around that she had become truly interested in him. For one thing he didn’t look like the type of guy who would be interested in dance. He looked more like he should be out at a beach, surfing, not in a dance studio.

He was tall, had sandy-blond hair, and was one of the cutest guys Kaitlin had ever seen. She was still trying to figure out who he was when Ms Helèn called the whole class to attention.

"I have decided that, since Julian has joined our class we will be having one Pâtè de, or couples dance. Each of you is going to have a turn at dancing with Julian, so I can see who will work best with him. Sara you can go first."

The rest of the girls moved to the back of the classroom to watch. Kaitlin realized, as soon as the couple began to dance, that Julian as extremely good. Sara was nowhere near as accomplished, and so they did not complement each other in dance.

Ms Helèn also noticed it and shouted to them.
"NO, NO, NO! You DO NOT work well together, oh well. Um, Tania, you and Julian try."
Ms Helèn worked her way through the girls in the class, each of them having the same outcome.

Finally Kaitlin was the only dancer left, and she hoped that she would be able to work well with Julian. Ms Helèn sighed as she turned to her, "Kaitlin, could you please try dancing with Julian?"

Kaitlin nervously walked forward and took her position across from Julian, and waited for the music to begin. When the music started, she glided across the floor towards Julian and floated into his arms. As he lifted her high above his head she felt that they were suited perfectly to each other.

Suddenly Ms Helèn shouted at them, "Stop! Stop!"
They stopped dancing and turned to look at her.
"That was fantastic! I want you two to get comfortable with each other for the next month. Girls you all know the backup part to Pâté de, so can I see it all together please?"
Everyone moved to the starting position of the dance and, as the music started began to dance.

At the end of class Kaitlin and Michelle walked out of class together and started down the street towards their favorite, after class, café.
"Kaitlin, Kaitlin!"
Both girls turned to see Julian jogging down the street towards them.
"Hey Kaitlin, um, I was wondering, um, would you like to get something to eat?" He stuttered.

Kaitlin turned to Michelle to see what she thought, but before she could say anything Julian started talking again.

"If you don’t want to that’s ok too. Maybe another time, um so I’ll see you later then?" and he walked away quickly before either girl had a chance to say anything. Kaitlin looked at Michelle again and Michelle told her to go with him, and gave her a smile.

"Are you sure?"
"Of course, now go!"

Kaitlin turned and went after Julian. When she caught up with him, she asked him why he had left like that.

"Um, the way you, um, looked at your friend, I um, thought you mustn’t want me around," he replied anxiously.

Kaitlin giggled at him then, and he looked confused.
"Who wouldn’t want you around," Kaitlin asked, "You’re obviously a nice guy, and, I hate to admit it, but you’re kinda cute," she said the last part blushing.

"What’s gotten into you Kaitlin? You’re never this honest. NEVER!" Kaitlin thought to herself.
"So does this mean that you want a bite to eat?" Julian asked slightly embarrassed, and still confused.

Kaitlin just nodded, yes, she didn’t think she would be capable of anything more. She was surprised that he still wanted to hang out after what she had just said.

They turned and walked along the road back the way they had just come.
