Giorni in Roma (Days in Rome) - Chapter Nine
Ooh! Another long one for you guys & thanks Phoebe for commenting! The picture is of the bridge in the chapter. I got all of my inspiration from it. Like, for the whole story.
"Madison, do you want to see more of the market?" Ryan asked as the four were walking along the street. "There's another one across the bridge right over there," he said, pointing to an arched figure across the river. That was where some of the country landscapes started.
"Sure. Do you guys want to come?" She said to Greg and Aimee.
Aimee was about to answer when Greg piped up. "Oh, we'll just stop at the bridge. You guys can keep on walking to the market."
Madison looked at Aimee with a knowing expression and almost laughed, but she didn't want to embarrass her so she kept quiet.
They promptly arrived at the bridge and two of the four continued to walk past it. At this time, the sky was already a dark purple but a shimmering moon rippled the water underneath. The street lamps glowed and reflected off the little rocks of granite in the stone and to the distance, where Madison and Greg were walking, a small deserted white cottage sat still.
Greg linked his hand with Aimee's as they made their way to the middle of the bridge. She was startled by the sudden attention but her conscience told her to stay calm. They were silent for a moment until she realized the scenery was perfect.
"So, Romantic Fanatic, how's this for romance?" Greg said. He let go of her hand and turned to face her. In the dimness, it was hard to see her blushing face but he guessed she was blushing anyway.
"Romance?" She asked, oblivious to what he was talking about.
"I thought you were the one who was obsessed with the romance saga."
"Don't tease me Greg. Gosh, just look at that moon. It's beautiful," she said, trying to change the subject.
"Yeah," he looked up to the moon, then back to her, "Just like you."
Normally, when a boy said that to a girl, the girl would be overcome with irresistible temptation and happiness, but to Aimee, what he said was just a mere insult.
"Why?" He couldn't see it, but slow, hot tears were running from her eyes.
"What do you mean?" He asked. He was now cupping her cheeks and could feel the tears spilling out.
"After all this time, now at this moment you tell me you love me? Why? You led to me to think you never cared. I thought you weren't interested. This moment was supposed to be in front of Big Ben in England. You know, just how I pictured it. But Greg, now you tell me you're in love with me?" She ripped away his hands and let the tears fall into the river. With one swift motion, Greg pulled her back to him and pressed his lips against her for the first time. After what seemed like an eternity, they both let go leaving a distraught Aimee with a stained face and confused mind. "Greg, I still don't understand."
"I-I-I don't either," he stammered. "Can you step closer please?"
Although her question was still left unanswered, she did what was asked and stepped closer. Greg smiled and secretly prayed for her to smile back. So she did, and the two blocked out all noises from the ongoing couples and with his arms around her waist, they both looked out to the Roman horizon.
The stone bridge was quite long actually. It had taken Madison and Ryan a good ten minutes to reach the end. Of course, with Madison's curious mind, she constantly urged Ryan to stop to take a breath of the purple night in. What was unpredicted though was that at the end, there was a lovely orchard of green blossom trees with its canopy of leaves shadowing the way to the market. Aimee would have preferred this scene much more than the horizon, but all in all, she was too preoccupied with Greg's confession to look past the bridge.
"You're a very wondrous person, you know that right?" Ryan joked to her. He referred to their earlier stopping across the bridge.
She shook her head and smiled happily. "Oh look! The trees are so beautiful!"
It was as if the trees created a beautiful pathway to where we wanted to go mostly. Honestly, nothing will be able to top this night.
Ryan's a sweetheart. He took me across the bridge, although I did stop him too many times. He was patient all in although. Then when I saw the trees, it was as if the lovely heavens opened up before me. I can't even describe it.
Rome is so beautiful. I've used that word quite a lot, haven't I? But that's what it is! BEAUTIFUL. I cannot wait to write down my review of this wonderful city.
Oh, before I go all in-depth on how beautiful Rome is, let me tell you about the market.
So Madison sat there and wrote in her brown velvet journal. She smiled at every time Ryan's name came up from her pen. The evening was perfect, or, at least to Madison. It was a beautiful life for Greg, Aimee, Ryan, and Madison.
