Gifts for a Woman Living at an Assisted Living Facility

When my 99 year old great grandmother moved into an assisted living facility she always remarked that it was an environment that allowed her to feel independent and yet made her feel safe and secure at the same time. Although the facility did in fact make her feel as though her independence wasn’t compromised, there were still some things she wasn’t able to do at her own leisure, such as head out shopping!

There are certain necessities a woman needs throughout her entire life; sometimes she’s in a position in which she needs others to purchase these necessities for her. If there’s a special woman in your life who is living in an assisted living facility consider that she might appreciate some of the gifts described below.

A few items that were at the top of my great grandmother’s gift list were stamps and stationary. She loved sitting at her desk and penning out long letters to her 27 children and grandchildren. She always appreciated a nice set of stationary and envelopes, as well as the stamps to get them sent out. Another gift she valued was an assorted box of cards; birthday, anniversary, thank you, get well, etc. When she had these cards on hand it made it a lot easier for her to acknowledge a family member’s special event without having to worry about getting out and about to track down a card.

My great grandmother loved attending the Wednesday afternoon bingo games at the assisted living facility. At her facility they used dimes to mark their spots on the bingo cards; Gram loved receiving a roll of dimes in the mail from one of her grandchildren. She also appreciated a roll of quarters, which allowed her to do laundry whenever she chose. A very thoughtful idea is to call the facility ahead of time and pay for a weekly appointment that your loved one keeps. My Gram loved to have her hair done weekly and it only cost between $6 and $10. She was always so pleased when she would show up to the salon and be told that her appointment had already been paid for.

Just because a woman is aging and living in an assisted living facility doesn’t mean she’s thrown vanity out the window. Gram loved to receive gifts of body cream, perfume and lipstick from the important people in her life. She also liked to receive yummy treats such as a box of chocolates or some hard candy. (Why is that grandmothers always love hard candy?) My Gram also had a special treat she truly enjoyed; she loved to have a glass of sherry every afternoon and was always happy to see a visitor show up with a bottle of the good stuff!

Finally, the best gift you can give to someone who is living at an assisted living facility is the gift of yourself. Send a card, make a phone call or stop by for a few minutes to chat. You’ll be happy you spent the time connecting with this loved one; before you know it they’ll be gone.
