There are different stages of getting over a break up which need to be handled very carefully or else you may develop clinical depression. Here are the step-by-step instructions that will help to overcome the hurdles of each of these stages:
Stage# 1: The first few days after a break up are really very tough as you get to face the raw emotions. You feel that you may break down any moment. Do not hold yourself back and let some tears flow down just to feel slightly better. At this point of time, you are absolutely overwhelmed with grief and so, you should not be harsh on yourself. Do not thrust upon yourself anything that you do not feel like doing.
Stage# 2: This is the time when you have accepted the fact that it's all over. Have patience and give yourself enough time to handle the breakup. It could be a couple of weeks or a couple of months. Set a time period by which you want to get over your feelings and work accordingly. Do not expect too much from yourself. At this stage, you can talk to someone, a friend or an elder member of your family, whom you can trust and who can sympathize with you. This kind of sharing of feelings can help you to get rid of the heaviness in your heart.
Stage# 3: Now, time has come when you have to delete all the past memories. For this, you have to get rid of all those items that can remind you of your past relationship. It includes the letters, photographs, gifts, clothes and even some songs from your music library. Delete his or her number from your cell phone. It is a must that you sever all ties with mutual friends. This has to be done because otherwise, you may come face to face with your ex and it will hurt you all over again. All these are not so easy to do but it should be done as it will ensure a faster recovery from the grief.
Stage# 4: A relationship break up can badly dent your confidence and you may lose the hope that things are going to be normal after some time. Some people even blame themselves for the unfortunate event. In such a scenario, staying in a positive frame of mind is very important. You cannot afford to forget about your good qualities. To get over such negative feelings, you can jot down all the disturbing thoughts on a piece of paper and also write a few positive words next to each of them. Read this paper again and again or when you are in a pensive mood. You will see that those negative thoughts have gone out of your mind.
Stage# 5: You cannot mourn all your life for breaking up with someone. You have to move on in life and start afresh. Otherwise, it will affect your friendships, your career and many other things. So, efforts have to be made to normalize things around you. Keep yourself busy with various activities that you love to do. Catch up with some old friends, go for a movie, join a gym, try out some new hobby or do some community work. Thus you can divert your focus from all those unwanted thoughts that keep doing the rounds in your head. At the end of the day, practice meditation as it has a relaxing effect on the mind which helps in the healing process.
Getting over a break up is important for the sake of both your emotional as well as physical well-being. During this time, you have to take a very good care of your health. This is a highly stressful condition, and hence your body requires good, healthy foods and adequate amount of rest. Do some exercises regularly which helps to keep the stress levels in check.
