Getting In and Out Of Swearing

It is a fact, an everyday life encounter...not a pleasant one if addressed to you, however in general people swear, if not out loud, in their thoughts they do. Why? See how we get into this damaging habit but more importantly, what to do to get rid of it!
Why do we curse?

The first and most common of reasons is because you grew up with it, you heard it since you were born and now it become normal, a habit your family "gifted" you with. Consequently, embracing swearing it at such a young age, makes it look so "natural"!

The second reason is the environment: you did it just to be accepted in certain circles, like social smoking for example. This also occurs mainly in adolescence when the need to be accepted is so great that life values become secondary.

Another reason very connected to the second one is the simple exposure. Let's say that you don't curse, your family didn't, most of your friends don't swear, yet in school you have this bench mate that has now become your friend and she/he is swearing every second they get the chance. It is a fact that without realizing, by the simple fact of being exposed to that person every day for a few years...guess what comes to your mind when something goes wrong? Yep! The very word or words you heard your mate saying. You might not say it out loud...but you said it inside. Unfortunately, this is a pattern that works so awfully well!

Once it got to your mind, it is a matter of time until it gets to your mouth. If you start letting it out, you know, just among really close ones like your brothers and sisters, just to have a little fun... the next bridge is set: you swear yourself too. Even if you keep it to yourself, because you think it is somehow a way to make your frustration go away, is it really? Cursing and swearing do not help in that sense, this is not a good thing or a service you bring yourself, on the contrary, you lose your cool and control (the other physical and psychological consequences will automatically follow).

Now by the time you finally realize that this "vocabulary" is actually occupying more space than you ever intended, you try to get rid of it.

Do you think you can escape this habit?

Ask those who tried! It is very difficult, unless God Himself gives you a hand, you really can't do it by yourself, because you see, in repeating a sin basically, over and over, turning it into a habit and then into a way of life, there are always the messengers of sin involved, namely demons. It is a point where only Jesus Christ, the Son of God can offer real help, because it is only Him that defeated Satan's power.

Therefore, in addition to a strong conviction that cursing is a sin - and is offending God and the people around you ( that are the children of God, keep that in mind) what's more, you are robbing your own joy and tranquility - add to your conviction the awareness that your enemy, Satan, is behind this and ask God to get you rid of all the demons that might still have an influence on you regarding this matter. There is no greater power than that of God and Jesus Christ will help us to be perfected.

You'll need to use your spiritual weapons! To keep away from cursing you should change your environment if possible and friends if the case - remember that bad friendships ruin good habits- but most importantly seek closeness to God trough reading the Bible, meditating on it and praying. Knowing God is a key factor in every battle, this battle against curses is also won by applying this truth to your life; when you spend time with God you will be filled more and more with His Holy and beautiful character, you will have peace inside and when the occasion arises, you will be calm so you won't respond swearing.

Sing! Have you noticed that when you sing you can't be mad? Keep singing in your mind or out loud if situation allows, because when you cast a bad habit out of your life, you need to replace it with a good new habit! It is very important to do that! Of course when I said sing, I referred to good music promoting Christian values that will build you up, not music like hard rock with satanic words!

Yes, like all Satan's traps, swearing seems harmless at first...it is when you want to get it out of your life when you realize how much of a grip it has actually got on you!

I've read testimonials of people who have had the experience of seeing hell one way or another, and I have noticed them mentioning how much cursing is there in hell; they declared that demons are cursing far, far worse than what you can actually hear on the surface of the Earth. God knows, but one thing we know for sure: every good thing comes from God and all the bad ones come from the father of lies, from Satan.

Swearing is also a lie, a trap where we fall because we believe "it will feel better afterward" or we fall for any other kind of delusion, but have you tasted the satisfaction of winning over cursing? O that certainly feels much better! Feel the sweetness of being clean, of being in control over your thoughts and you can do it, with God's help of course! Don't give in, it might as well be a long and strenuous process lasting longer than the time you "become skilled at it", but, hey, it is surely worth it! Do what you can do, and where you can't, ask God to take action, He will!
