The last words of an job interview can sometimes leave an unclear impression of the company's hiring decisions. Virtually all companies interview several candidates for each job position. You are probably one of many, so allow a few days to hear back from the company regarding their decision. Once a company has made their hiring decision it's professional for them to notify all candidates, but not every company will do this.

Writing a thank you letter is a good policy following an interview. Don't try to sound too persuasive in your thank you letter. A good interview thank you letter is short and expresses appreciation for the company's time during your interview. If you feel a particular key fact concerning your qualifications was omitted during your interview you can briefly address that as well.

If you haven't heard back from the company after a few days a phone call inquiring about the job status is acceptable. Be prepared to have to make a few calls and leave a few messages before you reach the hiring manager. Also be prepared for any answer - they may have already selected another candidate. If you learn that another candidate was selected, never express any kind of disappointment or anger with the hiring manager.

It's perfectly acceptable to politely ask what qualifications the hired candidate had that you were lacking. Feel free to ask as many questions as possible while the hiring manager is on the phone with you. Any feedback from a hiring company regarding your personal qualifications or background is immensely useful to you in your future resume drafts and future job interviews.

In any communication with the hiring company always leave on a positive, open-ended note with the hiring manager. Express gratitude for their time with you and wish them success with their business. There are many situations where a certain hired candidate doesn't work out and the position is re-opened for the next qualified candidate.
