Get Organized Before Moving

Follow these tips to get ready for your next move!
Congratulations on your new move! It’s hard to believe how quickly the time to move can sneak up on you once you make the decision to relocate. Moving from your home is a huge step, one that requires a lot of preparation. Here are a few helpful tips to make that transition just a little bit easier.

In the bedrooms of your home, you’ll get the chance to pay close attention to all of your closets (you know you haven’t had the time to do it recently!). Moving gives you the perfect opportunity to comb through all of the "absolutely-have-to-keep" and "just-couldn’t-part-with" items that are in your closets. With your new home, you get a fresh start, and it’s best to leave the old junk behind. One of the most common mistakes that people make when they move is bringing a lot of junk that they don’t really need. Take advantage of the move to make the load a little bit lighter.

Trash or Treasure?

In addition to getting rid of items that you don’t use, cleaning out your closets will help to streamline the whole process; there will be fewer things you have to pack up and move to your new home. You can give much of these things away to charity or to Goodwill, as long as it is in a decent condition. Now you are not only clearing out extra stuff and making your move easier overall, but you are also giving to others! What is junk for you may make a great gift for people that are currently in need; as the old saying goes, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

When it comes to your other parts of your home, the strategy that you used for your closets will again come in handy. Do you really need your old dresser? Can you give it away in a yard sale or leave it with the home if you don’t really need and/or want it? Will you be replacing those couches in the new house? What do you plan to get rid of as soon as or shortly after you move? It is a good idea to give these things to charity so that you do not have to worry about moving it out of your old home and into your new one.

Pack with Purpose

As you are packing, it is best to start early on your collectible or fragile items. Wrap all of your collectibles very carefully and tightly to keep them safe during the move. Keep them in a strong, sturdy box and mark it in multiple places "FRAGILE." You want to be sure that the box is clearly marked so that anyone who sees the box knows to be careful with it.

With your bathrooms, you want to make sure that you clean out all of your personal products from all of the drawers, so that no one else will have to. You’ll probably have a lot of old products or things that are no longer looking so nice and fresh. Don’t be afraid to throw things away! However, if you have items in your bathroom that are in decent shape or are still unused, keep these things - because you will need them in your new home.

These are just a few issues to consider and do during the initial stages of moving to a new home. Think smart, don’t be afraid to give or throw things away, and pack in a way that will protect your belongings!
