German Goalkeeper Commits Suicide

The goalkeeper for Germany and Hannover 96, Robert Enke, has apparently committed suicide, though the reason for this is unknown.
Robert Enke (32) was hit by a regional train traveling from Norddeich to Hannover, at a railway crossing in Neustadt am Rubenberge. Enke was fatally injured and died on the spot. The German police released this statement, "The victim is apparently national team goalkeeper Robert Enke from Hannover 96. The first police indications are that it was a suicide." Also German team manager Oliver Bierhoff had this to say, "We are in a state of shock. It is beyond words." Dr Theo Zwanziger, president of the DFB, also had this to say, "The football community in Germany is deeply distressed and in mourning, all our sympathy goes to the wife of Robert Enke and his family."

Enke played eight matches for Germany, and as indicated by German coach Joachim Löw, was the front runner for the position of goalkeeper for next year's world cup. He also played for different clubs like Carl Zeiss Jena, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Benfica, Barcelona, Fenerbahce and Tenerife. Since 2004, he was playing in the Bundesliga for Hannover. But he was down with a viral infection which forced him to miss the last 4 games Germany played. He had just returned to action for his club last weekend, and was not called to be part of the German squad which is in Bonn and due to play a friendly match against Chile this Saturday.

In 2006, Enke's daughter Lara, passed away due to a rare heart condition. She was just two years old at the time. He was married to Teresa, and the couple had just adopted an eight-month-old daughter in May this year.

On Tuesday night, hundreds of his fans descended over Hannover's Niedersachsen Stadion to lay flowers and light candles as a mark of respect for the captain of their club. There is a news conference that has been scheduled for 1230 GMT on Wednesday.

Robert Enke will be dearly missed by many. May his soul R.I.P.
