Gay Marriage : Pros and Cons List
Detrimental to the Institution of Marriage
One of the arguments against gay marriage is that if they are legalized, the institution of marriage will lose its significance. Traditionally, marriages are believed to be solemnized for the continuity of the human race. A man and a woman get bound by marriage in order to procreate and raise children. Legalizing gay marriages will send out wrong signals to the future generations, who would deem marriages between a man and a woman unnecessary to raise children. Such a view can shake the very foundation of our society. That's why, those who are against gay marriages proclaim that to save families and society in general, gay marriages should not be legalized.
Moral Degradation
Another drawback of a gay marriage is that legalizing them can cause moral degradation. Two men in a relationship are much more likely to stray and have an affair outside than a man and a woman, for the reason that women are mostly monogamists. Also, men may not be able to domesticate each other like a woman can domesticate a man. This can lead to many vices in men such as excessive drinking, gambling, etc. Thus, same-sex marriages can lead to moral degradation, with extramarital affairs as well as other vices becoming a norm.
Children with Low Self-Esteem
Speaking of the legalization of gay marriage pros and cons, children who are raised by a gay couple may become low confident or have low esteem issues. A growing child needs both a father and a mother, in order to become a mentally stable and healthy adult. In gay marriages, either the child will miss out on the affections of a mother or the guidance of a father, thus having an adverse effect on his personality.
Denial of Basic Human Rights
One of the arguments for gay marriage is that every human being has a right to live the way he wants to. He has a right to choose his sexuality, his partner and the family he wants to build. Considering this, people for gay marriages suggest that by not legalizing gay marriages, the government is denying gays basic human rights.
Beneficial for the Gays as well as the Society
People for gay marriages are of the view that legalizing them has many benefits, both for those leading a gay life as well as the society in general. They proclaim that gay couples who get married might not indulge so rampantly in extramarital affairs as those who are just living together, without a marriage. According to them, legalizing gay marriage will send out a positive signal to the society that marriages should be based only on love and nothing else. Also, since gay couples cannot procreate naturally, they are more likely to adopt children. This will give a lot of orphaned children a comfortable and loving home to live in.
One of the gay marriage facts is that it has been legalized in some parts of United States such as Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, New Hampshire, Washington, D.C, and Vermont. By other state governments, the gay marriage pros and cons, are still being contemplated. Looking at the way things are proceeding with this social issue, there is still a long wait, before the gays can have a right to live as respectfully as heterosexuals in America.
