Learn How to do a Garter Stitch

Follow these simple instructions on how to cast on and make a garter stitch. Remember this will form a 7'' x 9'' square block. Later join this block to any of your pending projects like hats or scarves and enjoy the wear. Simple! let's begin..

Materials Needed
  • Worsted- Weight Yarn (color of your choice)
  • Yarn Needle (big-eyed)
  • 14'' Long knitting needle size (8)
  • A pair of scissors
Instructions

Cast On
#1 Step: Form a slip knot on your knitting needle. Count this as your first stitch.

#2 Step: Now hold the above needle in your left hand. Get hold of another needle in your right hand and take control over the yarn.

#3 Step: Tuck in the right hand's needles point into the slip knot under the left needle, do it from front to back.

#4 Step: Brace your left hand fingers over to the right-handed needle gently.

#5 Step: Now with your right hand index finger gently draw the yarn from the ball.

#6 Step: Loosen up on the right hand needle's grip and by using the index finger pull the yarn under and over the point of the right hand needle.

#7 Step: Now bring back your right hand fingers to the right needle and immediately with the point of your right pull the yarn through the stitch.

#8 Step: (I hope things are easy until this step) Well if so, proceeding further, firmly slide the point of the left-handed needle into the back of the new stitch and remove the right needle gently.

#9 Step: Pull the yarn softly to fix the stitch on the needle. This is your one stitch (cast on). Check are there two stitches left behind on the left needle along with the count of the slip knot stitch.

#10 Step: This is the final step in knitting where in you have to tuck the point of the right needle into the last made stitch all the way from back to front. Do it under the left-handed needle. From here onwards - repeat all the steps from 6 through 10 at least 26 times more till you have 28 sts left behind on the left needle.

Phew!! It looks extensive, but isn't! This is how you complete the cast on row in knitting. From here on you begin knitting all your projects by simply following these 10 steps. But these steps were simple cast on instructions. Many people adopt different styles of knitting to get their work done. For instance some like to purl back and forth, for them that's faster. Others do this stitch in the round by simply turning their work backwards and proceed to knit and purl accordingly.
