Garden Tractor: Parts and Attachments

Garden tractors are lightweight and sturdily built. What makes them appealing is their easy operatability and wide range of attachments to help the domestic gardener. One may choose a gas or electric-powered tractor depending on the size of the garden. Garden tractors have a horizontally-mounted or a vertically-mounted engine and consists of a wide range of garden tools, parts and attachments such as cultivators, rotators, dozer-blades, disc harrows, rollers, tillers, etc.

The garden tractor is a very useful lawn and garden product. However, people using garden tractors are sometimes prone to accidents, simply because safety manuals and measures are not taken seriously. One should understand the mechanics of these attachments to ensure that no untoward incident occurs. Here is a list of the parts and attachments of a garden tractor.

Cultivator: This is also known as plow, and as the name suggests, its basic use is to cultivate the soil deeply. This attachment is mounted on the tractor using a three-point linkage to adjust the width and depth of its furrows.

Disc Harrow: This implement is used to cultivate the surface of the soil, unlike the plow. It follows the same technique of operation as the cultivator, but the basic purpose of the disc harrow is to prepare the soil. It breaks up the lumps of soil to provide a finer finish and better tillage to the planting operations.

Front Blades: These blades are used for mowing and leveling grass. Attached to the garden tractor, they can be hydraulically controlled and adjusted to reach the toughest spots. Front blades save time and give a professional finish to the lawn.

Dozer Blades: These are heavy metal blades mounted on the front of the tractor and are generally used to move sand, debris and heavy objects.

Sickle Bar Mowers: They are heavy-duty mowers that makes cutting of grass easier in difficult areas like under a fence, around big trees, around ponds or lakes and even roadsides. Tiller: A tiller attachment has wide usage in both open and narrow spaces. Soil can be tilled as per the depth requirement of the seeds or seedlings. It also helps to remove and control weeds and loosen up the soil between rows of plants during the growing season. It tills the plant remains by chopping and burying them in the soil.

Chipper and Shredder: This attachment is a heavy gauge steel body that performs two functions: chipping and shredding. The chipper blade chips tree limbs for ground-clearing and the shredder which is mounted on the top of the attachment shreds leaves, stalks and garden waste while collecting it in a chamber.

Sweeper: This attachment is designed for ground maintenance and cleanliness. It is basically a brush that consists of several bristle sections and can be angled at any three positions: right, left, and straight. It removes leaves, sticks and debris from the lawn, sidewalks, driveways, etc.

Snow Blower: The snow blower attachment is used for clearing snow from the garden pathway or sidewalk. They are lightweight, easy to maneuver and can blow out a lot of snow.
