Ganoderma extract is prepared from the reishi mushrooms, also known as Ganoderma lucidum. This extract can have several benefits for health, as well as a few side effects, which are discussed in this article.
Ganoderma is a genus that includes several species of polypore mushrooms that mainly grow in the tropical regions. There are about 80 species of mushrooms that belong to this genus, but out of them the most important species are, Ganoderma lucidum (also known as 'Reishi'), Ganoderma applanatum (Artist's conch), Ganoderma philippii and Ganoderma tsugae. Ganoderma lucidum or reishi is the species that is widely known for its medicinal properties. Reishi mushroom has a bitter taste, and it has been a component of the traditional Chinese medicine. Gastrointestinal discomforts like, upset stomach, diarrhea and constipation are some other common side effects. Ganoderma has blood thinning properties, and hence, its simultaneous use with blood thinning medications should be avoided. In addition to these, dry throat, dry nose and nausea are its other possible side effects.
