Ella's P.O.V
when Chad said those words, my whole world fell apart.
I had only been a werewolf for a few moments, but I felt I belonged.
My family was here now, and I would fight to defend it to the bitter end.
"What war?" I asked, once I was sitting down
Chad cleared his throat. "as soon as we were wedded, the rebel clan made a move. They declared war on us, knowing we would be much weaker."
"Why would we be weaker?" I asked.
"Because you would have just been bitten, and I, and our kingdom, would naturally be worried about you. They struck when they had the upper hand. And war begins in but a few moments."

I tried to make sense of all this.
"So.. when do I fight?" Chad sprung into action.
"There is no way, and alpha will be my witness, that I am letting you fight." he said.
I looked into his eyes and said "but, as alpha was your witness, yesterday you promised to defend me in battle. How can you defend me in battle if I'm not even there! Your fight is my fight." I said.
He drew in a breath,
"alright!" he said. Wow I was not expecting that!
"You can fight. But as soon as I tell you to get off the field, you run. I don't care what happens, run. Do you understand?" he asked.
"Yes. I understand darling!" I said. Ii turned to Nyx.
"Now. What should I wear to a battle?" I asked. And nyx's smile spread like an infectious disease across all our faces.

Just moments later (thanks to werewolf speed)
We were dressed in the traditional war gear.
For the men, they wore red and black outfits, stretchy but god they looked hot.
For us, we wore what you would expect to wear to the gym, but we all wore red and black.
'I'm guessing those are our signature colors.' I thought.
'You thought right.' Nyx's voice appeared in my head.
Just as if she were speaking out loud. 'So that's how it feels!' I thought again.

Moments later we were outside, and already a thin film of early morning mist was settling over the kingdom. But I could spot a blue haze of men approaching us in the distance.
'That's the rebel clan.' I heard Andy say in my head.
'Quick question. Do we fight in werewolf form or human form?' I asked no-one in particular.
Kate glanced at me thankfully. She was dying to ask that question but didn't want to look stupid.
'We do the formalities in human, then as soon as the kings turn, we turn' Xanthe said.
Rolling up her sleeves, and tying up her hair. We all copied.
Don't want hair in your face when you are trying to rip the throat out of a werewolf.
Chad took me to one side, and held my tiny hands in his.
"Now, remember what I told you. Always go for the jugular, don't let them get your neck.
Do quick movements. They're probably newborns, like you. Which means They'll be confused.

Remember it's your first turning, so You'll be very powerful, and won't know what to do.
So just, follow my lead. And for gods sake, try not to get killed.
Mates go into battle together, as in battle form, their senses are heightened, and mates become one.
We are an unstoppable team you and I. And remember. The most important thing to remember. I love you." he said.
I nodded and said "you don't need to hear my answer! You already know it in your heart!".

A bugle sounded. I looked up,
Chad appeared next to me, then Zander, then Kate, then Andy and crystal
Then on my other side was Nyx, then Matt, then Llena and Nico. I looked around
"Where is Xanther?" I asked.
They all shrugged.
"He's not a team player." they all said in unison.
I rolled my eyes. 'of course he's not!' they all chuckled, then in a brink of an eye all changed.
I used to be terrified of wolves, and I used to feel an outsider when they all turned, and I was the only one left human.
But as I turned, it was an unbearable pain, and I wish it would stop! Just make it STOP!
But then a cool voice appeared in my head. A voice from a dream.
It was a mixture of a woman, speaking to me, in her sensible calm voice, telling me not to worry.

and not to fear, in the background was a wolf howling.
Such a loud noise, I wanted it to stop, but at the same time I never wanted it to end.
My eyesight intensified ten times better than usual, and I could smell... oh I could smell so many things...
and I could hear! I could hear birds tweeting in the next county, and I was furry... oh. I was a werewolf.
Even in my werewolf state, and even when they were in their werewolf states, I could tell who was who.
Chad was staring at me transfixed, "you are the most beautiful wolf I had ever seen!" his voice was in my head.
I blushed.
Can werewolves blush?

We took off at a run, and we were going at the speed of the wind.
I was so happy! I felt at one with nature, and that I was unstoppable.
I looked behind, and I could see that they were all far, far behind me.
I was so fast!
But soon enough, I reached the front lines, and I stalled to a stop.
I turned into a human again, and stretched out.
The king and queen looked me up and down approvingly.
"Well done, my dear!" the king said, and promptly turned to a man approaching, clad in blue.

"Ella costello! Well well well!" he said, instinctively, I stepped behind Chad, and Chad gave a low, predator growl, the man wisely took a step back.
"Well, little Ella isn't so little any more!, don't you recognize your grandfather?" he asked.
I wasn't shocked. I knew I came from werewolves, and my family had history. It couldn't be all good.
He shook hands with the king, and they both did a short prayer to alpha.
They both stepped back to their clans.
The king looked at me.
"Let the carnage begin." he said cheerfully, we stepped back and turned.
The war to end all wars. Had just begun,
