The Funeral
The horrors and sadness of losing a loved one…
I sit in the empty room
Full of sorrow
Full of love
Listening to people rant
About how great you were
Before that big accident
Ruined you for good
I still can’t believe
How you left me behind
How that truck didn’t stop
As if they were blind
I wish I could have been there
Instead of you
Maybe then you’d be okay
And beside me today
Tears cascade down my cheeks
As I look at your face
Your casket lay open
As if you’re alive
That you need air to survive
I look around and see millions of faces
All peering at you
Looking deep in the past
Weeping over your body
Laying still as can be
I hold my breath
Trying to push away the tears
It’s hopeless of course
Because inside
I know you are gone
And you’ll never be at my side
We drive down the road
To the dark cemetery
Where people weep
And fall apart
I cry even more as they talk
And pray
And I’m forced to watch you
Descend into the grave
I throw a rose on your casket
As you make your way down
Knowing I have to leave you
I have to learn to remember
And not hold on forever
I blow a gentle kiss good-bye
And watch as my love descends up those stairs
The stairs to heaven.
Full of sorrow
