How often we come across a bunch of fruit flies in our kitchen? Clearly, very often. Homemade Fruit Fly Trap

Vinegar
  • First of all, you need to arrange for a clean, odorless jar of medium or large size. Make sure it doesn't smell of any attractants.
  • Now, pour cider vinegar in it, say one-fourth of the jar.
  • Cut a large piece of paper and make a cone out of it. Place the cone over the opening of the jar such as the conical end is well inside the jar.
  • Now, keep this jar near a high trafficking fruit fly area say overnight or 2-3 days at a stretch.
  • The fruit flies would get trapped and would not be able to come out. Throw them or kill them using a pesticide.
Soap
  • For this, take a large dish or a bowl and clean it properly.
  • With the help of a dishwasher detergent, create soap suds or lather on the dish or inside the bowl.
  • Keep it in your kitchen or near the garbage disposal.
  • The fruit flies would get entrapped in the lather and die gradually since they can't tolerate the chemicals in the dishwasher detergents. This trap is certainly one of the easiest ways to get rid of fruit flies in the house.
Bowl
  • Take a large bowl and clean it properly so that there isn't any food attractant smell inside.
  • Now, keep a cut piece of fruit, preferably banana inside the bowl.
  • Cut out a plastic piece and tightly cover it over the opening of the bowl using a rubber band.
  • With the help of a fork or a thick needle, make some holes onto it so that the fruit flies can enter the bowl easily.
  • Keep the bowl in a fruit fly prone area and wait for few days. The fruit flies will get entrapped. Throw them and wash off the bowl and use it again for the same, if you wish to. This has been one of the most popular methods of getting rid of fruit flies in kitchen.
Zip Lock Bag
  • If you own those zip lock bags, then that would help in killing fruit flies as well.
  • Place a fruit piece inside the bag and keep the bag open near the fruit fly trafficking areas.
  • As soon as you see number of fruit flies entrapped, zip lock the bag and dispose it off.
