Freelance Writers: How to Save for Retirement by Creating Passive Income

If you're a freelance writer, you probably spend the bulk of your time chasing the next gig. This doesn't leave a lot of time to think about, and plan for, retirement. But, you must. Here we discuss two ways you can easily create passive income streams to help you save for retirement, with links to more in-depth information.
Instead of talking about marketing, how to get more clients and how to land more gigs, I wanted to digress in this article to point out what I think is a too often overlooked topic among freelance writers - retirement. Freelance writers should look beyond clients to creating self-produced streams of income.

Freelance Writers: Do You Want to Retire Comfortably One Day?

I'm a freelance writer. And, ostensibly it's a career I could do well into old age. But, I don't want to. I want to retire comfortably one day, just as if I had a regular job with a 401(k).

This is why over the last year and a half or so, I've turned my attention to using my freelance writing skills to achieve my future goals. Following are two ideas for creating self-sustaining, passive income for freelance writers.

Two Information Products Ideas Freelance Writers Can Use to Create Retirement Income

Capitalize on What You Know: We are a society that craves information. And, thank goodness, this goes beyond what the big publishing houses put out. Ebooks, tapes, CDs, DVDs, etc. can all be produced relatively cheaply by freelance writers.

If you worked with a lot of advertising agencies as a freelance writer, you could produce a line of information products that detail how to get work from them, types of projects to expect, who to talk to get your foot in the door, etc.

Note: Your information product can be on anything you have expertise and/or an interest in and can research. For example, if your hobby is making shadow boxes, you can write about that.

The bottom line is, people pay for information that helps them solve a specific problem. And, who's better at creating an information product than a freelance writer?

Virtual Real Estate (VRE) Empire: This is simply websites you create that you monetize. It can be one site, or 100. Many who run virtual information empires have a few sites, eg, 10-20, each focusing on a niche.

Most of these sites are monetized with Google Adsense, for example. But, I'd go further than that and seek out private ads. That way, if Google changed their algorithms, you won't have to worry about your site disappearing from the rankings, hence losing the bulk of your traffic and income.

These are but two examples freelance writers can use to create passive income for retirement. Find more on this subject, Freelance Writers: How to Create Passive Income for Retirement on InkwellEditorial.com.
