The mind is the fountainhead of thoughts. Won't you agree with me that for a few of us, its ability to generate infinite number of thoughts on divers subjects, sometimes, presents a problem? The gift that was endowed on us by evolution to ensure our survival has become a hindrance, when we are pressed for a solution to a complex problem within the given time limit. In most of the situations at each turn of thought the mind tries to keep sidetracking us by digging up data on the past experiences, feelings, the battles won and lost, and to do lists for the future.
By analyzing its functioning, sometimes, it appears to be an opponent that is bent on our survival, rather than our accomplishments in the present. At times it really makes us slog, to further the logical reasoning that we think will solve the problem at hand. It was found that the mind of an accomplished human being can hold, at a time, only 6-8 concepts in its focus without losing their details and interlinking. If you go through the history of inventions then you will realize that quite a number of them are fruits of either deep sleep (structure of Benzene) or unrestricted wanderings of the mind of the inventor. Some of these lucky people have hit upon the solution when they were least concerned with the problem at hand. Remember, 'EUREKA!'. Every civilization, at one time or the other, felt the need of harnessing the power of this wandering beast to complete the task at hand in time. Their efforts yielded different mind control techniques as well as memory techniques. Cognitive mind mapping is one such technique which, although in use since the 3rd century, become popular in 1960s.
Mind Mapping
The left brain is sequential, logical, analytical, rational and looks at the parts of a concept or a thing. On the other hand, right brain is random, intuitive, synthesizing, subjective and tries to take in whole of the concept or thing at a time. In most of the individuals either the left or the right brain is prominent. Mind mapping is a technique that is used to forge a bridge between these two, in order to solve a problem at the concept as well as at the levels of details. It is done with the help of figures. The idea that is most central to the problem is written or drawn on a blackboard and the arrows leading from it connects to the sub-concepts that are inherent parts of the problem and which must be given due consideration, when it is their turn. Each figure or the concept on the blackboard is treated as a peg to hang related thoughts on. Each concept is broken down to its smallest details with the aim of understanding and finally interlinking all the concepts of the problem at hand. Brainstorming, which uses the technique, harnesses the creativity of the team members by letting them consider any detail of any concept that is a part of the problem. Every useful suggestion finds itself attached to its parent concept which, in turn, leads directly or through some intermediary concept to the central concept at the heart of the figure on the blackboard.
