Free Email to Fax Services

Transfer of email to fax machines is one of the functions of ProtoFax. The ProtoFax server software receives email through a network connection. A fax modem is connected to the computer. The email is transferred to the destination fax machine through this modem. ProtoFax can receive email from an existing email box. The other method is to create an email box on ProtoFax. Email can be received directly on the ProtoFax server, without the need of any external mail server. POP User Name is the user or login name for the email box that is to be checked using ProtoFax. POP account password is the password of the email box that is to be checked using ProtoFax. POP server address is the IP address of the mail server that has the email box that is to be checked using ProtoFax. Efax is a quick and reliable method to fax using email and the Internet. Email attachments can be sent as faxes.

Procedure for sending mail as fax

Open the ProtoFax server administration. Click must be done on the User Management tab. Further, click the Add a New User button. Insert a unique user name. In case of POP accounts, this name is used by ProtoFax internally. Choice of the Account type has to be POP. Enter the POP user name, POP account password, POP server address and the fax number. Other settings are retained at their default values. Click on apply. Select the Services tab. Check Load on startup for POP and Fax/Pager services. Click on apply. Launch the ProtoFax server. Ensure that the mailbox that ProtoFax would check has mail in it. Then, ProtoFax will countdown and retrieve any mail from the email box. Further, it would fax it to the fax number input. In case of eFax, an email has to be opened. The recipient's number has to be input. The documents to be sent as fax are attached. These files can then be sent. In case of InterFax, a standard email program like Eudora or Outlook or a web-based one like Hotmail can be used to open a new email message. In the To field, the recipient's number along with the country code has to be entered. This always begins with "00" or "+". The message can be entered in the body part as text. Or standard files like Word.doc or Acrobat.PDF may be attached. This email is sent as usual. These outgoing faxes are similar to mail in the Sent Items mailbox. A confirmation message is sent regarding the success/failure of the fax. The outgoing fax queue can be seen in the web-based interface.

Errors

If the person tries to start the ProtoFax SMTP/Printer Driver service, "Cannot bind to port 25" error may be received. This means that there is some other application awaiting on this port on the IP address. The remedy is to alter ProtoFax to a different IP address or port number on the Services tab of the ProtoFax Server administration. Another error is that when the modem dials the pager service, it hangs up immediately. The solution is to add AT&M0 to the Optional Modem Init on the Modify Pager Service screen on the Pager Settings tab under User Management in the ProtoFax Server administration.
