Fox Making Reality Show Centered on Employee Layoffs
The Fox Network is developing a new reality show called Someone's Gotta Go, which will follow a different company each week who must let an employee go.
The show allows the employees of the focus company to ultimately decide which of their colleagues is let go. Clearly, Fox isn't going for too much depth with this concept, as most small companies could make that decision in about 5 seconds. There's almost always a "least favorite" employee in small companies and with people being naturally cliquish, the decisions should never really come as a surprise.
But that's exactly where the magic of reality television comes into play. With production tricks and well-edited commentaries from the onscreen players, what is obvious to all of the participants will be completely unknown to the viewing audience until every episode reaches its dramatic climax. Fox is saying little about the new show and it's difficult to project how well something like this will be received in an economy where many people are feeling the stress of possibly losing their jobs in the near future.
One component of the show will be that the show's host - an unnamed business personality - will offer the companies financial advice throughout the course of the elimination process. That aspect of the show may actually prove more interesting, with a celebrity business know-it-all trying to impart management wisdom to small companies who likely don't want to hear it.
