Forbidden - Chapter 1

A sample of something new I'm working on, let me know if I should continue.
Saturday mornings were the same routine over and over. Wake up, go downstairs into the kitchen where my mother would be making breakfast and my father would be sipping his coffee while browsing the morning paper. Yet this Saturday morning was different. I didn't wake up to the usual birds chirping outside my bedroom window, but instead I was awaken by an unusual amount of ruckus coming from downstairs. I got up from my bed and walked casually down the spiral steps.

Turning the corner that lead me into the living room I saw my family sitting, sitting and discussing the top story in the paper. "Those swines!" My grandmother shouted, "They want another war?! Well then they shall get one, we're not going to be pushed around by such halfwits!" In a loud -hurrah- my family agreed to my grandmother's statement. I wondered to myself what is causing them to all come over and make such a racket. As I walked into the room I greeted everyone with a cheery 'good morning'. I decided that I wouldn't intrude in their discussion and proceeded straight into the kitchen. While doing so, I noticed my cousin was also in the living room, so I signaled him with a effortless head nod. He spotted my signal and politely excused himself from the den to the kitchen. I walked into the kitchen, grabbed a mug and poured myself a fresh brew.

"Would you like some as well Gerek?" I asked my cousin while sitting down on the countertop. He kindly declined and sat down on the stool across from me. Gerek is about 4 years older then I, yet we get along with each other better than with anyone else. The occasional argument (occasional meaning almost weekly) does arise between us but it doesn't affect our friendship. A key fact about Gerek is that he has to think about everything he does before doing it, while I for one do the mere opposite.

"So their bickering finally woke you up eh Man?" Teased Gerek. "They've been at it for two hours already, I have no idea how they can discuss for so long."

"Two hours? My, that's so long. What are they even squabbling about, the Russians again? And stop calling me Man! It's Manya!"

"I'm not even sure myself, at first I thought it was about the Germans but I got lost when they started to jump back an forth between Germans, Russians and Ukrainians and the war."

"Oh, so just the usual then I see. Damn, how I wish something new would happen."
"Same here, but I think there will be something happening very soon. Did I tell you I received a letter from Janek?"

"Janek?" My heart froze for instant, "My Janek, I mean your friend Janek that I know?"
Gerek smiled, "Yes, yes, that Janek. He wrote it 2 weeks ago and I received it yesterday morning. It said that he's going to be passing by Random in 2 weeks with his crew. He plans on staying a day or two before heading further east."
