For Joy

I wrote this for my husband....
Like a child, bashful, gay, I peek
at images – ours – and stare in awe
of the joy-wonder-nearly painful happiness
the sight of you brings me.

You bring me serenity,
tenderness, sensuality, poetry;
You bring me laughter, freedom, dreams:
the joy and pain of self-discovery.

I listen to you laugh, and I am
uplifted. Your laughter –
lifts my heart,
destroys my fears, frees my soul –

Your laughter brings out
laughter of my own.

I listen to you laugh, and watch
the crinkles in your eyes,
the tilt of your lips,
the lines on your cheeks –

Your happiness brings forth
my own happiness.

Senses keen, eyes closed, I relish
your closeness. I hear your heart beat
near my ear, feel the warmth of your skin,
taste your breath on my face.

Watching you sleep, I wish
I can share your dreams,
fight your ghosts,
hold at bay your fears.

I wish -
forever,
to you, I can promise.

You are – my love,
my darling, my Joy –

For you, with you,
I want to live
my life’s poem.
