Football Field Length

If you are a die-hard fan of American football or soccer, you should know all about the football field length and width. Knowing this not only increases your knowledge of the game, but also helps you understand it better...
Knowledge about the football field's dimensions does not seem like something fans and players need to be aware of, but it is certainly something that the most passionate fans will know. The length of a football field, be it American football or soccer, is universally known and all professional stadiums and grounds adopt these measurements. In soccer, there may be some minor differences in the length from stadium to stadium, and this occurs because these stadiums are historical monuments that have been around before the measurements were standardized.

On the other hand, American football requires that the playing field's length be uniform across all the grounds and the stadiums in the country. The National Football League (NFL) has laid down particular guidelines and rules about the length, and this cannot be altered.

American Football

The shape of the American football field is rectangular, and this holds true for a soccer field as well. The playing field's length is supposed to be 360 feet, while the width is supposed to be 160 feet, based on the conventional football field diagram. These same measurements apply for American football played at the NFL, at college football and high school level. The uniformity in the field size of all pitches and stadiums across the world means that a player gets used to playing in these dimensions from a young age.

Other Measurements
The space behind the goal line and the end line on one side of the field is known as the end zone, and this is where the players must reach in order to score points. The end zone is an extension of 10 yards behind the goal line, and this exists on either end of the field. The goal posts on an American football field are 10 feet high and 18.6 feet wide. These dimensions remain the same for football played at all levels, with a few minor differences in youth football occasionally.

Soccer

When we speak about football field measurements for a soccer pitch, we find that different soccer pitches have different dimensions. The difference may be very small, but the point is that the makers of the pitches are free to decide these measurements. This is especially true for all the soccer pitches in England, Spain and Italy. Since these pitches have been around for centuries and have been through a lot, their measurements vary.

The shape of the field is rectangular for soccer pitches as well, and the field length can vary between 100 - 130 yards. The width of the soccer field is allowed to vary between 50 - 100 yards. The goals are placed at the center of each sides goal lines, and the objective of the game is to hit the ball between this designated area. The goal posts are separated by a distance of 8 yards, and they are 8 feet high. The top of each goal post is connected with a horizontal bar, and this completes the measurement of the designated goal.

International matches governed by FIFA are a little more rigid and strict about the measurements of a soccer pitch now. According to them, the length of the field has to be between 100 - 110 meters, and the width has to be between 64 - 75 meters. Compliance with these measurements is mandatory at a pitch where an international soccer match is taking place.

Players, coaches and fans can develop their game once they are well aware of these numbers, and it also lets the groundsmen and the developers of the pitch make the ground compliant with the rules and guidelines.
