Foods High in Sodium
There are many different uses of sodium. Commonly used as a flavor enhancer, the salt also known as sodium chloride is the main source of sodium. Most of the sodium that we consume is in the form of table salt. Sodium is vital for normal functioning of the nerves and the muscles. It plays a very key role to regulate healthy water levels in our body. Natural foods such as fresh vegetables and fruits are low in sodium. Therefore, it becomes necessary to add common salt to fulfill the daily requirements of sodium intake. A well-balanced diet must contain sufficient amount of dietary sodium.

Foods that we consider as healthy choices have high sodium content. When the body does not get adequate supply of sodium, then it can cause general weakness. Deficiency of sodium can be harmful to health, and in a way can affect your normal routine. Loss of sodium often occurs during heavy perspiration. The symptoms of sodium deficiency are as follows:

Many people today still do not know what foods are high in sodium. Processed and packed food products are known to be high in sodium. This is because salt is an important food preservative, hence, it is added in excess to restrict bacterial growth. Limiting the intake of foods high in sodium is what is recommended by most doctors. They should be present in small amounts in your daily diet. When buying packed foods, you need to read the food labels that give an idea about the overall sodium content. Following are the processed foods that contain a high amount of sodium
  • Canned foods that include vegetable and fruit juices
  • Frozen and fast foods
  • Powdered Soups
  • Sausages
  • Pickled Products
  • Mustard
  • Marmirte
Foodstuffs that contain baking soda or baking powder as an active ingredient (sodium containing compounds) also are categorized under foods high in sodium content. Canned and frozen meats such as chicken, ham, tuna or salmon are not a good for those wanting to restrict their sodium intake. Canned meats, although an excellent source of proteins, are highly processed. As a result, these foods tend to be high in sodium content. A sodium containing solution is often injected into canned foods to enhance taste. Even processed cheese, salty meats, snacks and smoked fish also come in the list of foods high in sodium. Snacks such as peanuts and popcorn are considered to be a rich source of sodium. Dried foods such as pastas and macaroni have high levels of sodium. Grain based foods such as biscuits and crackers also belong to the group of foods high in sodium. Eating of breads, breakfast cereals and pastries can also contribute to a high sodium intake.

A meal high in sodium is often recommended to those deficient in sodium. However, the key to a healthy diet is moderate intake of foods high in sodium. Remember, too much consumption of aforementioned foods can cause several health problems including high blood pressure. Eating these foods in small quantities is the safest way to reap benefits of the mineral sodium. Having fewer processed foods is an easy way to cut sodium intake.
