The human ear comprises three sections: the outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear. Mostly, the middle ear is filled with air, however, it can sometimes get filled with fluid. Water retention occurs behind the eardrum in the middle ear during a cold or respiratory infection. However, its failure to drain out after the cold has cleared is what conduces to the condition called 'serous otitis media'. Water can also conduce to fluid retention in the ears, which means, swimming and bathing can bring about a condition called 'swimmers ear'.
