Flower Girl Dresses : Choosing your Style

You are planning your wedding - congratulations! It is likely that you have a vision of just how your wedding should look.

How do you choose the perfect flower girl dresses for your wedding?

There really isn’t a "right" style for flower girl dresses. The important factors are:

What is your (the bride’s) vision of her perfect day? This is #1 the most important criteria! What does the picture in your mind of your flower girls on your wedding look like? In your "mind's eye".

• Do they look sweet – ethereal?

• Are they wearing soft, full dresses with colored sashes?

• Are they wearing full white or ivory dresses with colored flower petals in the skirts or something more A-line or in a color to coordinate with your wedding party?

• Is one dressed more like you (which is actually a miniature bride)? Note: If you want a miniature bride’s dress to exactly match your own, you will have to select a gown from a manufacturer who actually offers this service. However, several really darling miniature bride dresses are available.

• Are they older and dressed in sleek, semi-bride’s maid styles?

• Are they all dressed the same or are different age groups dressed separately?

Then answer these two questions:

What are you (the bride) wearing? Are you (the bride) wearing bright white or off-white? This is very important because you do not want to mix bright white flower girl dresses against an off-white wedding gown! But more than that – is your style a full ball gown or is it an A line or something sleeker?

What are the bride’s maids wearing? They’re probably in color – or colors. Do you want to incorporate these colors into your flower girl dresses? Remember that to get an exact match you will have to order them from the came company as the bride’s maids’ dresses at the same time from the same dye lot, but you can coordinate nicely many other ways.

These are all things to consider when selecting your flower girl dresses – but there are absolutely no rules. The bride’s preference is the only real criteria that has to be met.

And one other thing – are the rules about modesty at the wedding’s location? Does your church or synagogue require sleeves, for instance? Always know in advance and always comply, without exception. There is no reason to get stressed over it at the last minute.

If you fall in love with beautiful sleeveless flower girl dresses but have to have sleeves, simply add a sweater or jacket over the dresses for the ceremony. Most dress companies do offer these, so you shouldn’t have a problem.
