DVDs are bound to get scratched after recurrent use. However, don't be disheartened if your favorite DVD gets scratches. This article suggests some methods of removing the scratches from a DVD.

How to Fix Scratches on DVD
Before you know about the ways in which you can fix scratches on DVD, it is important to learn to identify the scratches. This is because not all type of scratches can be fixed completely. For instance, DVDs which have scratches that start at the center and reach till its rim can be fixed, however, if the scratches appear in a circular motion, they cannot be fixed. To know the type of scratch on your DVD, hold it under the electric light and you are likely to find the scratches. If the scratches on the DVD are not circular, you can use any of these methods to repair it.
Clean the DVD
Many people have said that sometimes their DVD does not work, even though they cannot see any scratches on it. In such conditions, the problem may be due to some other issues like dirt and oil which can be rectified with a simple cleaning procedure. Moreover, even if you find the scratches, you can conduct the cleaning procedure before trying any of the scratch removal method. The best way in which you can clean your DVD is by washing it gently with liquid soap and warm water. Once you have done this, dry it with a clean, dry cloth. Do not use the DVD soon after that, rather keep it aside for some time, preferably overnight before using it.
Car or Furniture Wax
If the scratches do not disappear even after trying the above method, you can try using car or furniture wax. It is said that the wax helps in removing the scratches by filling them. To use this, pour a little of the wax on the scratched areas and then, wipe it with a lint free cloth. Make sure that you do not rub the wax in a circular motion as this can give rise to more scratches. Gently wipe the wax in a straight line beginning from the center of the DVD to its rim. Allow the wax to dry completely, before you use it.
Toothpaste
Most people must have heard that toothpaste is one of the ways of repairing scratched DVD. It is actually true that toothpastes can be good home remedy to remove scratches from DVDs. Though there are many people who say that one should use a toothpaste which contains baking soda, there are others who say that such a toothpaste can actually ruin the DVD more. Hence, the best thing that you can do is to use a plain toothpaste. Apply some toothpaste on the scratches and wipe it off in the same way that you did with the car wax. Even here, make sure that you do not wipe the toothpaste in a circular motion. One thing you have to remember is to never use a gel toothpaste as this may stick to the DVD making it difficult for you to remove it completely.
Depending upon the situation, you can now choose the best way to make your DVD perfect once again. However, if you do not find any of these useful, it would be a good idea to try some commercial DVD cleaning solution to repair the DVD. Though these kits are quite expensive, they are usually capable of getting rid of severe scratches. Nevertheless, if even this does not work, the only thing that you can do is to discard this DVD and get a new one.
