Chapter 7 - Adrenaline Rush
Chris snapped the phone shut angrily. Looking into his malicious red eyes, I was more terrified than I had ever been in my life. I avoided his scorching stare, backing away unconsciously. With that last step came a realization so obvious I found it hard to believe I had missed it in the first place. I gasped a loud, my eyes flashing up to his. I knew him! I had known him before Crystal told me about him.
He smirked dangerously sensing my horror.
"I was wondering when you'd figure it out," So I was right! I shrunk back against the wall but there was nowhere to run anymore.
"You're the one who attacked me" I breathed shocked.
"Haven't you figured out what that means?" His voice had lost all trace of friendliness.
I scanned my mind for a suitable answer but I could not think of any.
"I saw you in the forest..." He hinted.
I still did not answer although I had a pretty good idea of what he was talking about.
"I know you're secret Brittany,"
"I - I- don't know what you mean," I stuttered.
"You knew about DeBorough Academy before, you produced a disarming charm, you can communicate with cheetah's, There's only one explanation."
My silence confirmed his suspicions. The words dangled in the air tacit... 'I am an anidiator'
I still did not retaliate. What could I say?
"Until a few minutes ago Crystal was the only one who knew my own secret, by telling you she's endangered your life. How selfish" He laughed sourly "I would promise not to tell your secret if you promised to keep mine but I don't like loose ends."
"Secret? Crystal didn't tell me..."
Chris did not give me a chance to interrupt. He continued his confessions over my quiet protests.
"I didn't realize how much trouble Crystal would prove to be, I can't risk that again," He reached the end of his short speech and abruptly whipped something from his pocket. He moved with blinding speed. A sharp silver object gleamed in his hand. I barely had a chance to react.
"You have to move fast, Your opponent won't wait for you." A smooth voice echoed in my mind. I refused to be distracted by the silkiness.
I immediately lunged out with my fist, blocking out Tysons words. It only stopped Chris momentarily but that was long enough for me to bolt out of the room. I ditched the stairs knowing the chase would undoubtedly be over if I tried to climb them. There was no way I could get out of the front door before Chris reached me. Where could I go?
I rushed into the opposite room, hastily pushing a chair up against the door to buy me more time. I looked around frantically for a place to run.
"You can run but you can't hide!" Chris shouted from outside the room. I heard the door to the room beside the one I was in open and slam shut. His footsteps thudded closer to the door. There was a store cupboard against the far wall but apart from that and a small table - the room was bare.
Chris had me cornered. I ran to the cupboard and wrenched the door open. The chair began to rattle perilously. I threw a panicked glance at it, flinging myself into the tight cupboard. I hastily pulled the door shut to conceal me. The sound of my heavy breathing would definitely give me away. I tried hopelessly to calm it. I almost succeeded. Footfalls beyond. The cupboard handle twisted...
I was trapped, he was right. I could not hide. I sank back into the shadows but my head did not hit the wall I'd anticipated to block my way. I turned and miraculously found myself at the mouth of a dark staircase heading up. No time to debate. I climbed up it clumsily, slipping over the even surface. It was like I was in a nightmare. I tried to move but my coordination was all wrong. The faster I tried to run the more I tripped. I suddenly realized I was not the only one climbing the staircase, someone much more experienced was a few steps below me. I could not make out of his form, but I felt his hand close around my arm. in a vice tight grip.
"Your elbow is the strongest joint in your body..." I wanted to dwell on the seductive sound but I followed his advice thrusting my elbow back, Chris released me transiently, instantly resuming his attempt to capture me. He knew my tactics now, he would ensure he was out of my aim. I felt a weight on my arm. I shook it free only to realize he had not caught me. A ray of dim light caught the silver beads of my bracelet. Claire's present for my sixteenth birthday. It had cost her a fortune but it would save my life. Feeling utterly bad I tore it off. The beads bounced to the ground, scattering the way. It worked. Chris fell behind allowing me to barrel to the top of the stairs. There were half a dozen doors on this floor, he would probably expect me to hide in the one furthest from the steps. I entered the first room, it was a bedroom with a low Tuscany canopy bed. I ducked under the mattress a breathed a sigh of relief. Chris' feet thundered past.
If I had thought (as he assumed I had) that he would check all the rooms starting with the closest room - I would have hidden in the last of the six rooms. The one he checked first. I mentally calculated the possibility of me getting out of the front door without alerting him to my plan. I wasted precious time deliberating. Every millisecond brought him closer to me. He cleared the fifth room. The fourth room. The third room. He was to close. My breathing turned rapid again. I held my breath uncomfortably. I was dead. We both knew it.
"The games over, Brittany. Come out now, you know you can't escape. Your all alone." Chris called from the second bedroom. Tears of despair crept down my cheeks as I acknowledged the truth of his words.
"Come out Brittany and I might just spare you..."
I considered giving myself up. What did I have to lose? Chris's footsteps stopped outside the threshold of the first room. The game truly was over.
I inched closer to the edge of the bed and raised the draped mattress cover a fraction. He was in the room now. Chris's feet rushed towards me. I feared he had seen me but he pulled back the duvet covers. He would be less angry if I showed myself now. I crept out a millimeter then instantly froze. I sensed Chris's form turn rigid as well.
So I had not imagined it. Someone was in the room below.
"Brittany?" My immobile heart gave a violent jolt.
Tyson?
I wanted to call out to him, But Chris - whether he knew it or not - was standing right beside me. And even if I did? There was no way Tyson would get to me before Chris finished me off. What if he went away when I didn't answer? I hadn't realized my silent tears had turned to quiet sobs.
Suddenly the cover was ripped away and I found myself staring into familiar blood-red eyes...
