First Day on the Job, Better Dress the Part.
Finally you have graduated from college; long hours studying, sleepless nights, and tedious work have paid off. You have a plan and go after that perfect job which you have worked so hard to earn. The interview was exactly as you had imagined and the job was inevitably yours. Your first day is tomorrow and you have it all figured out, except what you should wear. A little dress code 101 never hurts.
Many offices will have their own culture which you should be aware of, the last thing you want to do is show up under dressed. Imagine going into an interview on a casual Friday to see everyone in jeans and polo shirts, then come Monday on your first day showing up in that same attire. Imagine going into an interview on a casual Friday to see everyone in jeans and polo shirts, then come Monday on your first day showing up in that same attire. This could be a disastrous occasion which can be avoided by asking the right questions. Here are a few ideas that may help you in deciding what you need to wear.
- The right pair of slacks or jeans. The right pair of slacks or jeans can help you blend right in with the rest of the work place. You want to select just the right pair that says I am in style; but doesn’t draw too much attention to you. Standing out is something you can do with performance rather than your image. Hollister jeans may be a great way to go. They have jeans that can meet the dress standards you are looking for, while at the same time provide the comfort required for a long day at work. However, if slacks are called for, be sure to have them pressed.
- Dress shirts, loose the t-shirt. Showing up in the right shirt can let your employer know that you took time outside of work to prepare to take care of the company image. You will more than likely have to interact with others during the day, and by dressing in the proper attire you can assist in building a relationship of trust with new and potential clients. If you have an old dress shirt that just happens to be name brand, but it has lost its color, take the time to wear a different shirt to protect that professional look.
- Shoes not flip-flops. Yes, you may still be living on your college budget, but this is definitely something you do not want to wear into the work place. Imagine wearing your sandals to work after being outside in them for the summer. Not only will the smell get to people, but the look says I just didn’t have time this morning. Discount shoes are available in many places. Overstock auctions has many different types of dress shoes that will match your exact need. You can pass on the message to your employers that you not only care about the work which you are doing for them, but more importantly yourself.
- Control the hair. You want to present yourself in a professional manner. You were hired because you have the skill sets the company requires and because you carry yourself in a respectable manner. Control your hair, be sure that you can maintain a haircut that will make others around you feel comfortable.
