Fireworks in Miami Just Ain't Like the Lake

Growing up in the great Midwest had it's perks. One of the perks of the Midwest is watching fireworks on the lake. Miami just isn't the same!
Having the luxury of a lake cabin to visit each year and spend time with friends and family in what people call "God's country" was something I took for granted. The fourth of July just isn't the same down here in the capital of South America, or in it's real name, what people call Miami.

It's just a different feeling watching fireworks here. People are all from different parts of the world. South America is represented very strongly here, with gobs of Colombians, Venezuelans, Ecuadorians, and Brazilians residing in the area. Though they call the United States home, it just doesn't feel like those summers on the lake back home with people who grew up their entire lives in the USA.

Maybe it's just the people that bother me, they aren't as nice as they are where I am from. Nobody says hello to you in the street or thanks you for your patronage at local businesses like they do in the Midwest. There is a sense of community where I came from, and that sense of community is not very present in Miami.

The fireworks that are displayed in Miami aren't the same as the Lake fireworks in Northern Minnesota. The lakes often have some of the best firework displays I have ever seen, and it's that much more serene watching it from a boat with friends and family. Enjoying a cool breeze, batting away the pesky mosquitoes, and spraying off like it's hairspray from the 80s.

Of course, there is always a good game of Hammerschlagen being played at the local bar, which is always room for a good time. Many bar fights start and end with Hammerschlagen.

I don't know what it is, but the Midwest feels more like America than Miami does. It's too bad, because Miami is a great city with many gorgeous parts that I like to call home. I just wish it had that "home" feeling.
