Finding Property in Portugal

The idea of owning a second home abroad – or moving to another country entirely sounds like a wonderful idea for many. Indeed, television shows such as ‘A Place In The Sun’ have helped to bring the process of buying a house abroad to the attentions of a wider public audience, and as such, has resulted in an increased number of Brits emigrating to other countries.

With popular destinations including Spanish resorts, the Algarve and even the Caribbean, buying a property abroad can be one of the most rewarding experiences. Indeed, most people would think of Spain as one of the most popular destinations to set up home. However, what about their neighbors to the West?

Many choose to take advantage of cheap flights and head further east to Portugal for their holidays, particularly the coastal areas along the edge of the Algarve region. The Portuguese coastline is littered with tourist resorts and the archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira, which attract tourists looking for a break in the sunshine.

As Portugal has a temperate climate, despite slight differences between the north and south of the country. Coupled with a booming property market, picturesque villas by the sea and warm weather, Algarve property has become a big favourite for expats from around the world.

Research is a key part to any search for property abroad; there are lots of aspects you need to check before committing to a move:

• Employment – look into your area of work before you decide to move. Resorts will have an influx of seasonal work around the holiday period. Skilled workers are advised to research employment agencies within the country; professions such as language teachers and labourers have seen a rise in demand due to an influx of expats over the years.
• Education – if you’re looking to move the family over, it’s important to make sure that your children’s school arrangements are in place before you commit to a move. Research schools in the area you want to set up home in, attend open days and weigh up the options before deciding on the right place to send your child. Bear in mind that there will be differences in the curriculum as compared to UK, and that the language barrier will ultimately be difficult at first, however, there also many international schools available which allow the opportunity to be taught in English as well as Portuguese.
• State System – you must ensure that all paperwork with regards to taxes and benefits are completed and approved – both for your property and your employment - before you settle in Portugal. The system for processing income tax in Portugal is similar to what we’re used to in the UK, but it’s always best to do a bit of research into what you will receive once you are registered and paying tax.

However, whilst it may sound wonderful to begin with, there will be pitfalls along the way. Problems with contractors, language barriers and even horror stories of false ownership are just some of the stigma attached to buying a property.

Despite the stigma attached to buying a property abroad, a little research can go a long way in helping to secure your dream property in the Algarve and other resorts. Algarve property has seen an increase in interest from Brits wanting to move abroad as of late. The area is popular with tourists, and many are attracted by the warm climate and the laid back way of life.

With an influx of British expats as of late, you’ll most likely find some of the more familiar aspects of life in the UK, with many bars and coastal pubs having a British feel about them.

Life in Portugal is relatively laid back, the people are friendly – indeed, the country does rank 7th in the list of peaceful countries - and you’re sure to find some fellow expats who have uprooted and set up home in the temperate climate.
