Find Something in You

Prologue. No one knows the reasons why Sadie Harnell got high with a gram of heroin, then simultaneously threw herself from the roof of her 7-storey apartment complex. The police are puzzled by the tightly-locked diary Sadie was clutching to her chest when her body was found. Eventually, they release it and it is given to her best friend, Daniel Jaxson, who is the sole person to know, what really happened to Sadie Harnell...
"Sadie, Sadie. My lovely Sadie. Why did you have to die? You never did anything wrong. People said they loved you. I loved you. So why did you leave me to die, inside..."

- Daniel James Jaxson

Prologue: Sadie's Last Words

Daniel Jaxson sat motionless upon his bed. His eyes were blood shot, his face
soaked with tears. He sniffled every now and then. A bloody razor blade sat on his night stand. His wrist was wrapped in tissues. He stared at it. He thought the same thing over, and over. Sadie, Sadie. My lovely Sadie. Why did you have to die? You never did anything wrong. People said they loved you. I loved you. So why did you leave me to die, inside... His anger and pain built. "Why?" he whimpered. He gripped his wrist tightly. "Why?" he whispered, louder with anger. Finally, he cracked.

"WHY!?!?" he screamed. He jumped off his bed kicked over his computer chair.
"Why!? Why'd you do this to me, Sadie? Why!?" he flew into a rage. He shoved everything off his dresser. He threw his lamp to the floor, smashing the bulb. He dumped all the pictures off his desk, smashing the frames. He screamed like an animal. He fell to his knees and sobbed. He picked up a broken frame. It contained a photograph of him and Sadie on their Grade 8 graduation. He cried. "She looks so happy," he whimpered. 'Why'd you do it? Why? I love you." He clutched the picture in his hands. Another burst of anger soon followed. He screamed and snapped the frame in two and whipped one piece at his dresser. He sat in the middle of the destroyed room, sobbing. Then, he heard a sound.

A clinking. He looked up. Dangling off the edge of his dresser was a necklace. One
Sadie had given him the Christmas before her death. He reached up and brought it down. He examined it. It was homemade, a simple twine string with ten silver beads. One for every year we've been friends. Sadie's voice echoed in his head. In the center of the necklace, splitting the beads five to five was a key. The key was small, no bigger than the tab on a pop can. It was silver and red with rust, from wearing it constantly. It was shaped like an arrow. This key is very special to me, Daniel. When the time is right, you'll know what it is for. He had been plagued with wonder. What did she mean? Then suddenly, Daniel knew.

He stood up and grabbed Sadie's diary off his bed. The police couldn't open it. The
lock had no key. He took the diary in his hands. He turned it to examine the lock. The lock was silver and shaped like a heart. He inserted the key into the small hole in the bottom of the heart. The top of the heart-shaped lock opened. Inside, was a tiny button. He carefully pressed it. The lock split in two, and dropped of the diary. Daniel sank down to his knees. He slowly, unsurely, opened the cover. On the first page, he found a letter. It was addressed to him.

To Daniel:
I'm sorry I did this to you.
I realized I didn't want to live anymore.
I couldn't deal with the pain.
I couldn't take anymore hatred and deception.
I didn't have the will, or the strength.
Read this, and please know why.
Find something in you to make you understand.
I Love You, Forever.
As always,
Sadie.

Nausea consumed him. He gathered all his courage and strength, and sat in the
middle of his room, reading the secret diary of the girl he thought he'd known so well. But in turn, Sadie had been hiding many dark secrets for a long, long time...
