Find Graduation Songs

There are so many great graduation songs that is can be difficult to choose songs for your graduation. Clearly your choice will depend on the occasion, the emotion you are hoping to evoke, the graduates taste and perhaps the traditional graduation songs played at the ceremony. Although there are lots of songs to choose from I do think some simple analysis should help you decide.

You can find out what songs have been played in the past at the graduation. The list of songs will give you a clear clue as to the style of the ceremony and also the expectation of the Principal. Perhaps they have played traditional music or more contemporary songs. You may fine a long tradition of playing the Graduation March by Elgar. My university always played Pomp and Circumstance which I found very old fashioned but it did seem to fit. Looking back it was actually perfect for this ancient university.

However in their suggestions may well be some great songs with just the right music and lyrics for the occasion. Perhaps you could also ask the graduates what their family would like to hear. Of course when you are engaging with your audience you will also get a sense of who they are. Possibly like the Wedding March everyone will know the music and it will evoke a great deal of emotion from proud graduates and their parents. Indeed many of the parents will remember Pomp and Circumstance being played at their graduation.

Further research on the kinds of songs you can play can be completed quite quickly. I helped my friend and his son James find graduation songs. We looked online and found a number of sites with lists and also recommended top 10 songs. The list were extensive. However on closer inspection we found that most songs could be discarded which left a few songs to listen to and decide on. Our idea was to create a top 10 for James and he would be left to make his recommendation. The top 10 was to include Pomp and Circumstance, and the Vitamin C graduation song. The others were to be included as they and atmospheric music and the right lyrics. Interestingly as we approached the top 10 we had songs from many decades. Also we had songs by great artists like Louis Armstrong, The Beatles, Coldplay and Cyndi Lauper.
