FIFA World Cup 2010 Standings: Day 1

The much anticipated FIFA World Cup 2010 finally got underway, with a glittering opening ceremony and 2 matches, one which included the host nation, South Africa...
Ok, it has arrived. The FIFA World Cup 2010. Everyone is done with their practice, warmup matches, and team selections. Now we are down to the business end. The opening ceremony had a typical African flavor, which was a nice change from all the previous World Cup venues. The only thing missing was the presence of Nelson Mandela, who did not come to attend the start, due to the death of his great granddaughter. There were 2 matches played on the opening day of the competition, South Africa vs Mexico, and France vs Uruguay.

South Africa 1 Mexico 1 (Group A)
After the curtain raiser and opening ceremony, the hosts kicked off the tournament with a game against Mexico in front of a near 85,000 strong crowd in Johannesburg. The strategy of Mexico was evident from the start, all out attack. The first half was a goalless draw, though Mexico dominated but could not make anything count. The hosts went into wild celebrations, when in the 55th minute Siphiwe Tshabalala netted one for them. Mexico kept pressing even more and eventually in the 79th minute, Rafael Marquez got one back for them. The match thus ended in a draw.

France 0 Uruguay 0 (Group A)
France took on Uruguay witnessed by a near 65,000 fans in Cape Town. Both teams were playing with the fear of an opening match loss, and that was evident from the game. Neither team produced many scoring opportunities, nor did they take any chances during the match. Uruguay were down to 10 men for the last 12 minutes of the game, and more than half the team was back in the penalty area defending. A game from which more was expected, ended in a tame goalless draw.
