Festivals in India
India is a country of fairs and festivals, which portray the diversity and unity of various regions, religions and communities of India. Fairs and Festivals in India are the integral part of the life of its people. Being a secular country, every festival, be it related to any religion, is celebrated with pomp and show with full spirits in India. Festivals are a medium of entertainment for the folks and brings them nearer to one another. Some of the important festivals of India are Deepawali, Holi, Chirstmas, Id, Maha Shivratri, Durga Puja, Ganesh Chaturthi, Dussehra, Lohri and Rakshabandhan.

Famous Festivals in India

Deepawali

Deepawali or Diwali is known as the festival of lights and is celebrated every year in the month of October/November. Celebrations of Deepawali can extend from 2 to 5 days in various parts of India. People light earthen lamps and lights in their houses and shops, and pay obeisance to Lord Rama and Goddess Laxmi for attainment of wealth, peace and good health. People distribute sweets and gifts among themselves on Diwali.

Holi

Holi is the festival of colours. This is such a festival which is celebrated by people of every religions and plays an important role in bridging the gap between people. On this day people smear colour on one another's face, then be it men, women, children, young or old. People visit one another's home and distribute sweets. It is celebrated in the months of February/March.

Christmas

Christmas is also a very famous festival of India. Every year, it is celebrated on 25th of December. This festival is celebrated on the occasion of birth anniversary of Jesus Christ. People offer prayers in Churches and decorate their homes pine trees, lights and lamps. There is a tradition of distributing Christmas gifts among the friends and relatives.

Durga Puja

Durga Puja is one of the famous festivals of India. It is very famous in West Bengal and is dedicated to Goddess Durga, which continues for five days. People offer prayers in various temples and pandals all over the country. On the final day of Durga Puja, idols of Goddess Durga are immersed in rivers and lakes. Goddess Durga is treated as the Goddess of 'Shakti' or strength. It is counted among the largest social events of India.

Rakshabandhan

Rakshabandhan is a festival which is a celebrations of emotions, love and care among brothers and sisters. Rakshabandhan paints the picture of rich tradition and custom of Indian society. On this day sister ties Rakhi or pious thread around the wrist of his brother and in turn brother assures her of her safety, alongwith offering of gifts. It is celebrated in every part of India generally in the month of August every year.

Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi is a festival which celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha. The festival falls in the month of August/September. It is believed that Lord Ganesha should be worshiped first during all auspicious occasions as He is the destroyer of all obstacles and problems.

Id Ul Fitr

Id Ul Fitr is a very famous festival of Muslims, which is celebrated to mark the end of Ramzan month. It usually falls in the month of April/May. Muslims observe fasts during the full auspicious month of Ramzan. Prayers are offered at various prescribed times and feasts are enjoyed during nights with family and friends.

Some of the other important festivals of India are Janamashtami, Karva Chauth, Teej, Onam, Maha Shivratri, Bhai Dooj and Pongal.
