The major Hindu festival, Dusshera, sprays the feeling of good times. It falls in the 10th day of the waxing moon, that occurs in the month of Ashwin(September to October). Devotees, in different parts of India prepare many events so to rock on the festival day.

History of Dusshera

Dusshera sparkles with depicting a mythological story, characterizing Lord Rama, his wife Sita, brother Lakshman, his disciple Hanuman and demon king Ravana. According to the saga, on the very day, Lord has defeated Ravana and saved his wife Sita from the cruel spell of demon. They day marks victory of good over evil and till date, devotes with following the epic Ramayana believe to celebrate the day with great devotion.

Ram Lila in Dusshera

Ram Lila is the main attraction of the festival. Many places like Delhi, Uttar Pradesh organizes on stage shows, highlighting the dramatic presentation of fight between Lord Rama and Ravana. Massive effiges of Ravana, Kumbhkarna and Meghnath are positioned on open air and a person dressed like Rama, arrows towards the images. The glow of burning demons act as a delightful scene for huge crowds.

Navratri or Dusshera

The festival night in Gujarat calls for Navratri celebration. Garba dance and cultural music romantisize the evening and night and everyone glitters with showcasing their glitzy attires. While, in Himachal Pradesh, devotees carry the village deities and organizes a grand procession. A similar type celebration is also arranged by people in Mysore. They lit up the street with artificial lights and engage themselves in carrying out processions of decorated elephants.

Dusshera in West Bengal

Dusshera in West Bengal is also known as Vijaya Dashami. The day highlights the immersion of Goddess Durga idol along with the images of her two son- Lord Ganesha and Lord Kartika and two daughter- Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Saraswati. The ritualistic ceremony symbolizes the return of Ma Durga to the sacred Kailash Parvat(the place of Lord Shiva). Devotees believe to tie a holy thread on their palms and sprinkle themselves with Shanti Jal (the holy water from the pond in which the idols are immersed)
